These yearlong posts will be undertaken in two six month blocks.
Oral surgery with Oral Medicine
Treatment under sedation
The Oral Surgery department has a total of 13 fully equipped dental units within 5 separate
areas occupying floor 2 west wing. Additionally the General Anaesthetic suite has facilities for
treating children on an outpatient basis under both short and Day Stay Anaesthesia together
with anaesthetist led Propofol sedation. The Oral surgery team consists of Mr M Murphy,
Consultant Oral Surgeon and Head of Service, Mr P G J Rout, Consultant in Dental and
Maxillofacial Radiology and Professor T Dietrich, Professor in Oral Surgery supported by
Associate Specialists, Specialty Dentists, 2 SpR’s, an ACF and an ACL. Full Oral and
Maxillofacial technical support is available.
Oral Medicine is a busy clinical area, located on Floor 2 East clinic. The Consultants
responsible are Mr J Hamburger (Senior Lecturer/ Consultant) and Mrs A Richards
(Consultant) supported by an Associate specialist, an SpR’s, DCT’s and an ACF and ACL who
are due to start in the New Year.
Clinical Attachments
The clinical duties of the SHO in Oral Surgery will involve out patient care of patients at the
Birmingham Dental Hospital involving all aspects of Oral Surgery. This will include attendance
at new patient clinics and also treating patients on their own dedicated minor oral surgery
sessions. Consultation clinics will also be held at the Boots Outreach centre in Birmingham City
Centre. In Oral Medicine you will work closely with senior staff members on those clinics.
Experience will be gained in carrying out a full range of diagnostic tests including biopsies. A
liaison psychiatrist is attached to the clinic twice a month, managing patients with oral
dysaesthesias. Certain clinics are involved in undergraduate teaching and there will also be
opportunities to gain experience on these clinics.

These posts includes out of hours on call duties at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. The post,
at present, is non-resident. The on-call rota will be fixed. The dental SHOs on call
commitments will be one night a week on call (1 in 7) for 6 weeks with the 7th week being a
rest week from on call commitments. The SHO will be encouraged to take annual leave in this
rest week.
Education
Postgraduate education is actively encouraged and the SHO’s will have the opportunity of
attending the regional study programme, specialist study sessions and participate in the
departmental audit programme. The departments have a strong research interest and
opportunities are available for involvement in a variety of projects.
Attachment Objectives
The aim of this post is to broaden knowledge and gain experience in the management and
treatment of patients requiring primary and secondary oral surgery procedures and to acquire
skills in oral surgery beyond those attained as an undergraduate. To provide you with an
understanding of the range of diseases and conditions which affect the oral mucosa and
associated tissues and the biological bases for these conditions. To gain experience in the
management of these patients and treat those with complex medical problems. The units
encourage a multidisciplinary team approach and your time in the post should provide you with
opportunities to develop diagnostic and clinical skills and allow greater understanding and
experience of managing patients in hospital based specialist services.
Treatment under sedation
The sedation service for patients is run by the Restorative, Paediatric and Oral Surgery
Departments. These are busy units that undertake dental treatment under conscious sedation.
All modern forms of conscious sedation are offered.
All three departments have Consultants supported by SAS grade staff together with post
graduate trainees.
Clinical Attachments
The primary clinical attachment will be 5 sessions per week when the SHO will be providing
dental treatment under conscious sedation. 2 of these sessions will be in Oral Surgery, 2 in
the Restorative Department and 1 in Paediatrics. The SHO will be encouraged to gain
experience in the assessment of patients requiring conscious sedation. Training will be
provided and the SHO will be encouraged to practice all aspects of conscious sedation. In
addition to this the SHO will gain experience of new patient consultant clinics, primary care
clinics. Experience at teaching undergraduate dental students will be encouraged.
A multidisciplinary approach is encouraged. A regional study programme and special study
days are provided. In addition there are opportunities for involvement in departmental
meetings, audit projects and journal clubs.

The assessment and management of patients requiring conscious sedation techniques
To further enhance skills in behavioural management, restorative dentistry, paediatric
dentistry and oral surgery
Become competent in the provision of dental treatment under oral and transmucosal
sedation, inhalation sedation and intravenous conscious sedation
Consultant diagnostic clinics and treatment planning

Mobility
Whilst the post holder will be based at the Birmingham Dental Hospital this is a Trust wide
appointment and travel around the Trust may be required. Flexibility with regard to timetabling
will be expected of the successful candidate.
