Transcribing Tombstone Information
At Green Hill Cemetery
In most cemetery office records, the only information about those buried is simply who is buried, in what burial plot, how much was paid for the plot, who
paid, and the burial date; the business records of the cemetery.
Whereas on the tombstone you may find much more information, such as birth date, death date, age, relationships (mother, father, son, daughter, wife,
husband, niece, nephew, etc.) and community involvement via words or symbols (Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), Woodsmen of the World,
Sons of Confederate Veterans (CSV), Masons, military service, religion) and even quotes attributed to or phrases chosen by or for the deceased.
Tombstone transcription projects document anything that is written on the tombstone. A list of cemeteries tombstones already documented, fully or
partially, is available at http://www.usgwtombstones.org. When there, simply click to select any state, then any county, then any cemetery.
On the following page are examples of the information to transcribe and type into a computer file. Create an Excel spreadsheet with rows and
columns of information. Ann can provide an empty spreadsheet already formatted for your use. Please consistently use the following shortcuts:
w/o for “wife of”, h/o for “husband of”, d/o for “daughter of”, s/o for “son of”. If tombstones are hard to read, record what you can and then type question
marks ??? where you are unsure of the words or numbers. Use the column named Your Additional Notes to share your comments, such as if “Shares
stone with ...”. When there are words, but you can't read any of it, type the phrase Inscription unreadable in the Your Additional Notes column to
distinguish those from tombstones with no information.
Make one computer file for for each section of Green Hill Cemetery. You may e-mail each section's computer file separately to Ann Stringfield, a
volunteer with Friends of Green Hill Cemetery. infocrofters@triad.rr.com. Ann will ensure your work is properly identified, and help you add required
wording to the top of your file. Then you will e-mail your file to the North Carolina Tombstone Transcription Manager Autumn Cummings at
cummings.autumn@gmail.com.
The USGENWEB web page on which your work will be published includes this notice: “In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the
