Preserving Places: Managing Mass Tourism, Urban Conservation and Quality of Life in Historic Centres 5-6 December 2008, METU Culture and Convention Centre Tourism in historic cities is continuously increasing following the global trends in the tourist industry. Tourism has played a certain role in promoting public awareness towards the historic built environments and provided the historical centres with the necessary resources for conservation. However, the negative impacts of mass tourism on the conservation of cultural heritage, and the impoverishment of historic places in terms of their civic values is evident. The planning and conservation policies in many historic cities continue to be fragmented and to ignore environmental and social issues as a result of undue focus on the short term economic advantages of tourism. In this workshop, the risks that historic centres are subjected to will be investigated on an international comparative and interdisciplinary basis, in relation with urban, conservation and tourist policies. The workshop will be the kick off event of an international project supported by the EU Culture Programme (2007-2013). In addition to theoretical issues on the urban conservation policies, the management of mass tourism and betterment of the inhabitants’ life quality in the historic centres, the participants will present case studies in order to increase awareness on the best practices and propose guidelines for a socially and environmentally sustainable enhancement of these places. The aim is to share these concerns with the principal stakeholders such as local authorities, tourism professionals, planners, architects, conservation specialists, students and citizens. The presentations will be either in English or in Turkish and there will be simultaneous translations in both languages.
