Course description: Japanese 1200, Beginning Japanese, is a 4-credit course designed for beginning students of Japanese. Japanese 1100 or equivalent background is a prerequisite. The course emphasizes the development of elementary level Japanese language application skills including listening, speaking, reading and writing by using basic sentence patterns, vocabulary, Japanese native scripts (HIRAGANA & KATAKANA) and approximately 50 new Chinese characters (KANJI). Course prerequisites: JPE 1100 Beginning Japanese I General Education Requirement: This course is classified under the Communication Skills Theme and meets the requirement for a course in Communication Skills B: Communication Contexts. General Education Student Learning Outcomes and the Five Themes: HPU’s general education curriculum is focused around five themes. This course emphasizes the Communication Skills Theme and provides students with opportunities to achieve the following related general education student learning outcomes: Students will demonstrate critical reasoning in organizing their thoughts, feelings, concepts and information in Japanese for effective, clear, and accurate oral and written communication. [CS 4] Students will compare, contrast, and interact with various communications contexts in Japanese, such as intrapersonal, interpersonal, small group, public, and mass communication. (Students will learn to use Japanese to reflect on their own thoughts and experiences, to communicate in one-to-one conversations, small group discussions, and class presentations. Students will also read authentic materials in print and on the world wide web, and listen to a variety of accents in conversations, group discussions, and formal presentations using both audio and video media). [CS 3] Students will analyze the way people communicate within and across cultures, genders, generations, and organizations and develop skills in communicating in Japanese across these domains. (Students will develop skills in communicating in Japanese with people from a variety of cultures, with men and women, with older and younger interlocutors, using both formal and informal registers). [CS 1] The course also addresses the World Cultures theme and provides students with opportunities to achieve the following related general education student learning outcome: Students will engage with and develop skills to interpret various manifestations of cultures of the Japanese-speaking world including verbal and visual texts, institutions, behavior, and performance. [WC 5] Course-Specific Student Learning Outcomes for JPE 1200 Beginning Japanese II By the end of the course, students should be able to talk and write about topics such as school life, their daily schedule, describing a neighborhood. Students will also be able to understand and respond with ease to conversational Japanese spoken at a normal pace. Students will be able 1. to use the basic sentence patterns of Japanese taught in Japanese 1100, and more advanced sentence patterns taught in this course. 2. to read and write KATAKANA, HIRAGANA, and basic KANJI taught in JPE 1100 with more ease. 3. to recognize and produce approximately 50 new KANJI. 4. to communicate in formal and informal situations. 5. to understand Japanese culture and culturally appropriate language use.
