instructions for preparing maps, Soil Mapping Units (SMU) descriptions,
Soil Typological Units (STU) descriptions, and measured and estimated Soil
Profile descriptions, in either or both paper or digital form.
This is a Word for Windows document.

Description: Database of basic data.
The data stored here are considered being:
. self sufficient: all the data necessary to the project are stored here;
. stable: the data must not be modified by others than the database
administrator for updating purposes. An update increments the database's
version number. An update implies that any previous analyses be re-run;
. reliable: the data are considered as of the best possible quality.
For analysis purposes, copy the necessary basic data to another appropriate
workspace.

Description: Unrestricted access workspace available to database users for
analysis purpose.
Users who wish to use the database can create objects either in this place,
or in specific project-oriented sub-directories created here or elsewhere
on the file system (but not in other Soil Database directories). This method
garanties that the database will not be altered by accident.
Examples of objects created by a user are: monitor files, macros, copies of
database objects such as coverages or tables when they need to be modified,
results of queries or analysis tasks, etc.
At end of a task or project, keeping only the built monitor files and/or
macros is a way by which considerable amounts of disk space can be saved
while the task may be reactivated whenever necessary.
File plot.monitor is an example of such a monitor file.
4.1 - File plot.monitor:
Description: Monitor file for the visualisation of a generalised theme of the
Soil Geographical Database of Eurasia at scale 1:1,000,000.
A monitor file can be used from a text editor, selecting parts of it that
need to be executed, and copying them to a window where execution takes
place. It is similar to a macro except that control over the command flux
execution is done by the user (by means of selection) instead of being done
by the macro itself (by means of specific command flux control instructions
such as "IF ... THEN ... ELSE" or "DO ... WHILE ...").
Monitor files are easy to build and to re-run, and can constitute a detailed
history of tasks achieved.
