BRUNEL UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIPS TERMS AND CONDITIONS 2012/13 Meeting the eligibility criteria does not equate to an entitlement to a scholarship. 1. Eligibility Eligibility criteria are reviewed annually. To be eligible for consideration of an International Academic Excellence scholarship, a student must have submitted an application via UCAS by 20th February for a course in one of the following subject areas: o Electronic and Computing Engineering o Computer Science o Law must be overseas, for fee purposes must meet the entry criteria for their programme of study and achieve one of the following qualifications and grades*: o 3 A levels with grades AAA or above o International Baccalaureate Diploma with 35 points or above must make Brunel University their firm choice through UCAS *qualifying grades must be in the subjects expressed in the offer of admission Where insufficient applicants meet the criteria to enable all the scholarship money to be allocated by September, consideration will be given to students who achieve AAB or equivalent~. ~ as defined by HEFCE 2. Scholarship Award Value: How many: For how many years: Application process: £3,000 p.a. fee waiver or £2K fee waiver + £1K in cash up to 30 3 years, subject to meeting progression criteria none required 3. Allocation 3.1 Scholarships will be allocated conditionally in March to those students identified as potentially being able to meet the eligibility criteria, based on information provided in their UCAS application. 3.2 Confirmation of awards will be made once the A level results are available. 3.3 Successful students will be informed by email or letter at the beginning of September. 3.4 Late applications (i.e. those received after 15th January), may be considered for any scholarships remaining unallocated after the main allocation meeting has taken place. 3.5 Scholarships cannot be backdated. 3.6 Only one scholarship can be paid to any one student in any one year. 3.7 Scholarships will be allocated in the same academic year as a course application is received. Should a student defer entry to the following academic year, any scholarship awarded may be deferred to the following academic year. 4. Scholarship Payment The student can choose from the following two options: 12 March 2012 1 (a) A reduction in tuition fees of £3,000 (b) A reduction in tuition fees of £2,000 and an additional sum of £1,000 in cash, paid in three instalments Payments in years 2 and 3 are subject to meeting annual progression criteria. See Section 5 below. Account application and distribution timings of fee waiver across each year are to be confirmed. All scholarship payments, discounts and fee waivers will only be made providing: the student is enrolled at the University on an undergraduate degree programme of study at the time of the payment the student meets the progression requirements 5. Progression Requirements In order to retain their Academic Excellence scholarship, students must evidence their excellence by maintaining a First Class profile at the end of level 1 and level 2. This profile is based on that which must be achieved in order to obtain a First Class Honours Degree. A student must achieve the requirements set out in 1 and 2 below: 1. The overall progression profile for the level must not contain any grades below D-. 2. Having met criterion 1 above, a scholarship holder’s grade profile for the level must also meet one or more of the following sets of criteria: Volume of grades at A- or better Minimum weighted Grade Point Average* At least 33% or better 14.5 At least 41% or better 13.5 At least 50% or better 12.5 At least 58% or better 11.5 At least 66% or better 10.5 *Calculated as set out in Senate Regulation 2 6. Withdrawal of a Scholarship 6.1 The University reserves the right to withdraw a scholarship from anyone who is found to have misled the University about any aspect of their eligibility and to seek repayment of any monies already paid by appropriate means. 6.2 If a student changes to a different programme or to a different mode of study, their eligibility for a scholarship will be reviewed and the scholarship may be withdrawn e.g. to a course for which there is NHS funding. 6.3 If a student takes a period of temporary withdrawal or withdraws from the course completely, the University reserves the right to seek repayment of any parts of scholarship award already made. This includes tuition fee waivers, accommodation discounts and/or any cash payments received. 6.4 Students who withdraw before the end of the academic year may be asked to repay part of their scholarship.
