STRUCTURE OF PROMOTION CASE AND CRITERIA FOR PROMOTION TO ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR 1. Structure of Promotion Case Promotion cases are normally recommended by the Head of Department, but may exceptionally be self-proposed (see section 4 of the general information document). The promotion case itself should contain the following documents: (a) A formal recommendation of the case for promotion, in terms of the promotion criteria set out below, written by the Head of Department (or, in the case of a self-proposal, by the candidate). (b) A personal statement of not more than two pages, prepared by the candidate, outlining why they consider it appropriate for promotion to be considered at the present time, including a section on the academic activity felt to be the most relevant to the case for promotion. (c) An up-to-date Curriculum Vitae in the approved style as set out in Section A of the attached supporting documents. (d) In all cases for promotion to an Associate Professor the Academic Staff Committee will expect to see evidence of high level competence in and commitment to teaching. Please refer to the Teaching Profile Preparation Guidance Notes in the supporting documents. There are two documents – one for cases claiming continuing proficiency and updating (see Section B of the supporting documents) and one for cases claiming teaching excellence (see Section C of the supporting documents). (e) The names and addresses of two external referees nominated by the Head of Department and two external referees nominated by the candidate. At least one should be an international referee. Candidates and Heads of Department are required to provide a short summary on the standing and relevance of each of their chosen referees, and to state any relationship or connection to the candidate. Referees will be sent the candidate’s personal statement and CV, but not the recommendation by the Head of Department. In no case should the Head of Department or candidate approach any of those named as referees prior to the promotion case being made. (f) The Academic Staff Committee reserves the right to identify its own referees in addition to those above. Note: In the interests of confidentiality, the list of referees must be provided on a sheet separate to the main body of the recommendation and the Curriculum Vitae. 2. Criteria for Promotion to Associate Professor The criteria for promotion to Associate Professor are: (i) (ii) (iii) (iv) (v) (vi) (vii) A proven ability in research and/or scholarship; A proven ability in teaching; A readiness to undertake administrative and managerial tasks within and on behalf of the University; Major achievements in research and /or scholarship; A consistently high level of achievement in research and/or scholarship; Significant contributions to the quality of education and teaching; Major contributions to other kinds of University and University-related activities, in particular to the creation and maintenance of the intellectual, cultural and social environment of the University and its standing and contribution to the life of the local, national and international community. To qualify for consideration for promotion, the requirements in (i), (ii) and (iii) above must be met, together with the requirements under at least one other heading. In principle, the more headings under which a case is made the stronger will be the case for promotion. The Academic Staff Committee is happy to consider recommendations for promotion based on teaching excellence and therefore welcomes proposals where the additional evidence relates primarily to Criterion (vi). In these cases, the teaching profile should be completed using the “Claiming Teaching Excellence” document. The criteria for promotion to this role are reflected in the wider role profile which provides further description of the accountabilities, knowledge and skills required to successfully fulfil the role. Candidates should take account of the Associate Professor role profile when compiling their case for promotion against the criteria stated above. Note.
