1 Summary, Literature Connections, Lesson Ideas Ashley Bien Grade: 3rd Concept: Understanding Place value and expanded notation. Flesch- Kincaid: Assessment directions: 3.7 Assessment without certain vocabulary words: 3.5 Michigan Grade Level Content Expectations: N.ME.03.02 Identify the place value of a digit in a number, e.g., in 3,241, 2 is in the hundreds place. Recognize and use expanded notation for numbers using place value through 9,999, e.g., 2,517 is 2000+ 500+10+ 7; 4 hundreds and 2 ones is 402.* Objectives: Students will: Understand the place value of any digit in a number Be able to build, draw, and explain numbers using place value mats and base 10 blocks. Be able to write a number in expanded notation. Assessment Timing: It took me 12 minutes to get out materials and take this modified test, so I expect students to need 25 -30 minutes to complete the test. Literature Connections: Earth Day-Hooray! By Stuart J. Murphy & How Much Is a Million? By David Schwartz Lesson Ideas: To introduce place value I would model building, drawing, and explaining several times. I would have the students building and drawing along with me. I would start with small numbers, such as 11, and explain 11 as 1 ten and 1 one. After modeling and practicing, I would have my students practice with a partner. I would then randomly select partner pairs to explain how they built, drew, and explained a particular number. The next day, I would like to have signs made with yarn across for students to hang on their neck. The signs will either say hundred, ten, or one. I would ideally take this lesson outside. Outside, I will draw three big circles (big enough for multiple students to stand in). We would then have the students represent numbers. A number 562 will have 5 students wearing the hundred sign in one circle, six students wearing the ten sign in the next circle, and 2 students wearing the one sign in the last circle. I would continue to do this until all students had participated. To teach expanded notation, I would again model using the place value mats and base 10 blocks. I would show the students that (234) can be written as 2 hundreds, 3 tens, and 4 ones or 200+30+4. I would practice this with the students and have them practice with partners 2 This assessment will show me what you know about the place value of a digit in a number.
