JOB DESCRIPTION - CERTIFICATED
POSITION:
A.
COUNSELOR: STUDENT ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
SECONDARY
PRIMARY FUNCTION:
Under general supervision of the School Principal, to perform comprehensive counseling and
academic guidance with students, provide consultation with staff and parents, conduct staff
development and parent education; and make effective use of community resources; and to
perform other duties as required.
B.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:
1.
Guidance
a.
Develop and adjust individual student schedules as needed to provide for an
optimum learning environment.
b.
Assist the Principal in creating the master schedule and maintaining class
balance.
c.
Provide articulation services between the middle school and high school
programs and between the high school and post-high school programs to assist
students in making the transition.
d.
Advise students regarding educational alternatives such as Carmel Valley High
School and Independent Study Programs.
e.
Assist students with the interpretation of individual test/inventory results such as
the Career Occupational Preference System and the Scholastic Aptitude Test.
f.
Establish and maintain a career and college guidance program, including
arranging visits by career and college representatives, and active involvement in
the College/Career Center at Carmel High School.
g.
Develop and assist with the implementation of an embedded 9 - 12 career
education curriculum.
h.
Provide information to students and parents concerning college entrance
requirements, application processes, scholarships, and financial aid.
2.
Individual and Small-Group Counseling
a.
Conduct or coordinate structured, goal-oriented counseling sessions in
systematic response to the identified needs of individual students or groups of
students.
3.
Consultation
a.
Consult with all personnel regarding specific students and general school issues.
b.
Participate in conference with parents, staff and social agencies regarding
students.
c.
Consult with parents regarding specific issues that interfere with school success.
4.
In-Service Training
a.
Provide in-service training on topics related to counseling, guidance, and
drug/alcohol/tobacco prevention.

Coordinate site staff development on conflict resolution and violence prevention
issues. Inform staff at monthly staff meetings about Site and District
health/Wellness Advisory activities.
5.
Parent Education
a.
Offer workshops, seminars and information sessions to assist parents to better
communicate with their children, to develop positive parent/ child/family
relationships and to apply strategies to help their children be successful in
school.
6.
Prevention/Intervention
a.
Develop and implement prevention and early intervention curricula and
programs.
b.
Coordinate and implement comprehensive Character Education, Tolerance and
Diversity Programs.
c.
Coordinate Red Ribbon Week activities, Great American Smoke-out, and other
prevention activities with site ASB and other site and district counselors.
7.
Student and Family Referrals
a.
Consult and coordinate with in-district and community based specialists and
programs.
b.
Assist students and their parents in locating support services to meet their needs.
8.
General School Operation
a.
Attend staff meetings.
b.
Serve on school and district level committees.
c.
Participate in activities that promote a positive school climate.
d.
Act as an advocate for groups or individual students.
e.
Contribute articles to newsletters and assist with developing the student
handbook.
9.
Program Coordination
a.
Coordinate, implement, and collect data for the site Student Assistance program.
b.
Coordinate and implement programs such as school-level testing and Peer
Counseling (including teaching the Peer Counseling class).
c.
Serve as site liaison to the District Drug, Alcohol and Tobacco Education
Program. Attend District Health/Wellness Advisory meetings.
d.
Assist the Health Specialist with the coordination of health services.
e.
Collect and submit site documentation of Safe and Drug Free School and
Communities and other appropriate activities as indicated by the Special Projects
Director.
f.
Assist in coordinating the administering of the Healthy Kids Survey.
10.
Planning and Evaluation
a.
Involve staff, students, and administration in establishing program goals and
planning counselor functions.
b.
Assist in evaluating the effectiveness of the counseling and guidance services.
Pursue professional growth through joining associations, reading professional journals, and
attending relevant workshops and conferences.

QUALIFICATIONS

Possession of current valid appropriate California credential(s).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Incorporated within one or more of the essential functions of this position are the following essential physical
requirements:
1.
Ability to see for purposes of reading correspondence, documents and other printed matter and to
observe students.
2.
Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels in person and/or on the telephone.
3.
Ability to communicate so others will be able to clearly understand a normal conversation in person
and/or on the telephone.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Office working environment subject to sitting at a desk and/or conference table for long periods of time, using
telephone for prolonged periods of time, and reaching in all directions.
School working environment subject to bending, crouching or kneeling to assist students, pushing/pulling and
lifting or instructional equipment and supplies, sitting on chairs and/or floor and leaning over desks for
prolonged periods of time and reaching in all directions.
