Core Competencies Reflection Assignment Open your transferable skills and core competencies inventory and complete the following: Choose two of your best core competencies. You can answer one or more of these questions, or you can ask yourself similar questions. Why do I consider this my "best" competency? What have I done that exemplifies this competency? Am I basing my decision on evidence (papers, projects) or my knowledge of myself? (I think I'm good at leading people) Note, what is a transferable skill to one student may be a core competency for another student and vice-versa. To determine if something is a core competency or transferable skill ask yourself if the focus is a process (transferable skill) or results in a product (core competency). Next, choose your best piece of evidence. In one or two sentences explain why this is the best piece of evidence. You can answer the following questions or something similar: Why is this piece of evidence better than the others? How does this piece of evidence exemplify my core competency? Am I basing my decision on other peoples opinions, arbitrary or specific rules? (I received an A on this paper)? Write a reflection for each competency. Your reflection should be no more than 250 words. Answer some or all these questions: What strategies did I implement in my evidence, and how does that connect to the chosen skill? What was the most difficult part of your evidence, and how did you overcome that problem? How does this competency apply to my career or future? What did I learn about myself in acquiring this competency? With reference to your major, how did this make you better? (I am a more well rounded biologist now because... I can be a better political leader now because...) How did learning this change you? NOTE: You are not required to answer every question above in your reflection. You may answer questions not listed above. The important factor is that your reflection is well-rounded, concise, and flows well. Next, for each reflection written, chose one or two sentences you believe capture the essence of the reflection to highlight. Upload your reflections to your Aportfolio and include your evidence. Lastly, highlight in some way (ie bold, create a word block, change the color) the one or two sentences you chose to epitomize your reflection. Include at least one carefully selected image, icon, photo or graphic to include in the Aportfolio Grading Criteria (4 points per competency max) (Two competencies required ) Inclusion of reflection of best core competency and best evidence.
