Places: 12
Descripction of Workcamp:
REGION: Region of Andalucía. Province of Sevilla.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK: Archaeological intervention in the Archaeological Ensemble of Italica and
analysis of archaeological materials taken from the site.
Area 1: La Cañada Honda. Located within the Adriano district, but off the path of visitor tours, it is of
considerable interest due to both the characteristics of the site itself and the possibility of expanding the
visitor route around the Archaeological Ensemble of Italica. The work done will help improve the overall
image of this area and incorporate it in the recovery process. Cleaning tasks shall take place along the street
(cardo) that leads to Cañada Honda, which was excavated back in the 1970s, and then archaeological
analysis and documentation work of the findings shall be done. The soil that has accumulated in the course
of several interventions conducted in this space shall be removed and a record shall be drawn up for each of
these interventions.
Area 2: Archaeological remains research, with the aim of furthering the research done in relation to the
ceramics archives by studying some of the old or recent stratigraphic records in order to gain more in-depth
knowledge of the materials, define the chronology of the different processes through which some of the
sectors of the city went and take a closer look at other economic and social issues.
In this 2014 edition, we intend to fully study the materials, including cleaning and initialling the pieces, in
addition to creating an inventory and sketches of the relevant shapes. The initials shall include a reference to
the excavation, stratum and identification number. The records shall be made in a comprehensive manner,
with an inventory file containing numerous fields such as the S.U., piece number, fragment, shape, type,
series, chronology, clay type, surface treatments, decoration and any other type of observation that may be
considered of interest. Drawings shall be done on a 1:1 scale with section and front views. If possible, the
digitalisation of these drawings can be done using Auto Cad software and the pieces that have decoration or
other significant features shall be photographed. The work shall be organised within a team of fifteen people,
which will be divided into smaller groups that will carry out the different cleaning, initialling, inventory and
drawing tasks in relation to the ceramics.

Palace). Archaeological sites of Baelo Claudia in Tarifa (Cádiz). Bolonia beach (Cádiz). Intercultural dinner.
Sports activities and swimming pool. Environmental activities.
LOCATION: Santiponce, with a population of approx. 8.140 inhabitants, is situated 7 Km. from the city of
Sevilla. It was built almost entirely on the ruins of the Roman city Itálica towards the end of the 16th Century,
and occupies the ancient city´s original nucleus. A major part of Itálica unfolds in the subsoil of the town´s
historical centre. The city, founded by Escipion in the year 206 B.C., was in fact the first Roman city in the
Iberian peninsula. Today we can admire remains of extraordinary value: its houses with beautiful mosaics,
still paved streets, original sewers, thermae and, above all, a magnificent amphitheatre, the Roman Empire´s
third largest in capacity. Likewise, the monastery San Isidoro del Campo is also worth highlighting, housing
extraordinary 17th and 18th Century works of art.

Descripction of Workcamp:
REGION: Region of Galicia. Province of Ourense.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK: As Corcerizas provides a participative area for a practical formation about bioconstruction through collective works which show how to use ecological tools in order to minimize the
impacts of our way of life on health, environment and society.
Structural restoration of the bioclimatically designed buildings: elaboration of clay mortar and application of
earthen plaster to indoor walls; understanding and application of ecological paints; natural treatments for the
wooden structures of the buildings based in linseed oil.
Moreover, the collaboration with the volunteers will be essential for monitoring prevention and detection of
possible fires in the forest environment of the San Mamede mountain range where the camp is located, as
well as for cleaning undergrowth and for the restoration of areas deteriorated by fire. The work is based on
the collaboration with a project in which we can prove that other models of human development can be more
respectful to our environment.
COMPLEMENTARY ACTIVITIES - LEISURE ACTIVITIES:
Environment workshops: solar ovens, soap making, recycled juggling etc.
Environment interpretative paths in the mountains and ethnography, with bath in the river.
Roll games and video-forums about social and environmental issues.
Guided visit of the city of Ourense: old town and hot springs.
Trip to the costs and beaches or the South of Galicia.

beds available, bathrooms, infirmary and kitchen; there is also a dining room and a classroom for bio
construction with space available for workshops and other activities.
The food is from the local ecological agriculture and fair trade as much as possible, which favours the
development of small farms, increases the value of local products and promotes a living rural area.
Moreover, the center tries to reduce as much as possible the production of waste by buying unpackaged
products. In the facilities, we make waste selection and compost with the organical remainders from the
food, Furthermore, in the facilities there is biological purification of the sewage through the use of a system
of aquatic plants in buoyancy, which reproduces the process of an ecosystem of natural wetland and creates
an carbon efficient habitat.
LOCATION: This workcamp is located in the rural area of As Corcerizas, inside the ecosystem of the 'Sierra
de San Mamede' forest, this is a 'Community priority' area, Macizo Central Ourensán, in the south-east of
Ourense province. This protected area is a huge opportunity to observe the biogeographic mixture blooming
between the Mediterranean humid region and the euro Siberian of the Galician - Portuguese mountains. The
differences in the climate and the variating altitudes, allow the existence of a huge diversity in plant species
such as Mediterranean and Atlantic species, this elements together give an exceptional biodiversity to the
area.
The 'Community priority' 'Bidueiral de Montederramo' thanks to its high ecological value, his conservation
and its rarity is avowed as one of the most important forests in Ourense province and it is one of the
southern birch forest in Europe.
The area is near the Sierra de San Mamede summit, place known for its view from 1600m, the born of the
emblematic Arnoia river and for the chapel dedicated to saint Mamed, place for pilgrimage connected with
the 'Monasterio de los Milagros' of San Mamede, also near to As Corcerizas.

REGION: Region of Madrid. Province of Madrid.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
The proposed works will help to improve the already existing aquatic ecosystems on the estate as well as
the surrounding areas.
Informative material for the public: diverse didactic material will be developed with the aim of providing
information about the work carried out since previous editions, and with the successful settlement of diverse
species of amphibians in recuperated lands (ponds of varying depths, wildlife shelters and fenced wildlife
protection areas) to promote the importance of conserving and respecting these species.
Ditches: consolidation of already existing irrigation ditches on the estate by topsoil extraction and
solidification of slopes.
Wooden structures: maintenance of wood with linseed oil and other low-impact fungicidal products.
Dining area: putting up a perimeter fence to mark out the areas that can be used, given the existing different
ground levels.
Vegetable garden area: inform of the possibility of building, using straw bales and plastering the walls with
mud from the region.
Shelter area: opening of a side entrance in the fence adjacent to the shelter to give access to the area
recuperated in the previous campaign.
Taking advantage of the amount of soil deposited in the area in front of the shelter, two terraces with
masonry using stones from the region will be built.
Removal of overgrowth throughout the estate to prevent fire propagation and removal of other unused
material, such as rubble and pieces of old iron that are on the estate at the moment.
Riverbed: In summer the Arroyo del Mediano stream suffers from low water levels and may even dry up.
This is the most favourable time for cleaning it up by removing timber and debris. Consolidation of the dam
at the entrance to the shelter. Through this action we prevent blockages and the walls of the estate being
swept away in case of flooding.
Perimeter fence: Work will continue on the perimeter fence of the estate.
Enhancing the importance of the stone walls as a way of modelling the landscape,
providing wildlife shelters and providing diversity through the groves generated in its surroundings: the walls
will be rebuilt through learning the technique of drystone walling.
Maintenance of the botanical garden: Maintenance of plant wells and pruning dry and swamped branches.

REGION: La Rioja. Province of La Rioja.
This is one of the oldest settlements in La Rioja, located on the right bank of the river Alhama, close to
Inestrillas and Aguilar del Río Alhama, between two small hills. The oldest remains correspond to a burial
site dating back to the end of the second millennium before Christ. In the cave of los Lagos (the lakes) some
human remains and pottery fragments from the end of the Bronze Age were discovered.
The Peledons settled at Contrebia Leukade during the Iron Age. There, they constructed a fortress, taking
advantage of a rocky escarpment over the river, urbanised the land and excavated houses in the rock, with a
rectangular floor plan.
Towards the second half of the 4th century before Christ, other Celtiberian tribes arrived. These tribes
extended the settlement and reinforced the defensive systems by excavating a deep moat out of the rock
and constructing ramparts around the town. Work was also carried out to supply the settlement with drinking
water. Then the Romans arrived and conquered the town in the year 142 BC, leading to the Romanisation of
the lands of the Alhama river basin. At present, the archaeological site is one of the most spectacular ones in
the Peninsular and is the most significant one for learning about the extent of the Celtiberian technical
development and organisational capacity.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK:
Cleaning and preparation of the terrain and structures of archaeological site Contrebia Leukade.
Workcamp in the archaeological site will be developed by the morning, from 8 to 12 hours on weekdays.
Affect the entire archaeological site and will consist of the removal of vegetation ( grasses, bushes and
shrubs) were born in the spaces excavated to date, preventing rating in perspective the different elements
discovered. Also proceed to the elimination or relocation , when possible, of the loose stones of the walls or
washed hillside.
Features and dimensions of spaces and structures formed by compacted earth floors, drywall locked with
earth or limestone soils where the roots have penetrated causing breakage and chipping, require extreme
care in removing plants and shrubs in any event must be supervised continuously and directly by qualified
personnel.
It also seeks to understand the uniqueness of the archaeological site and the motivations that led their
people at different stages in which the city was occupied.
Since this is a workcamp focusing on an archaeological site, priority should be given to students of ancient
sciences.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK: The archaeological site of the Baños de la Reina is situated on the coastline,
close to the promenade in the coastal town of Calp, whose most significant symbol, besides its beaches, is
the massive cliff known as Peñón de Ifach. This coastal site contains the origins of the current town, as this
place was populated from the beginnings of the Christian Era to the 7th century AD. The remains found in 15
archaeological campaigns has shown that this site was an important commercial enclave in antiquity. Both
these remains and the area surrounding the archaeological site need maintenance and preservation work.
The main aims of the next Calpe campus are the cleaning and tidying up of the site for its future restoration
and valorisation. Your help in this task can be invaluable, and we wish you an agreeable stay in this
emblematic Mediterranean town.
