Welcome Our Friends From All Over The World
What do we gain from
hosting the WTO Hong
Kong Ministerial
Conference?
What do we gain from hosting the WTO Hong Kong Ministerial Conference ?
The high-yield potential of MICE visitors
According to A Statistical Review of Hong Kong Tourism (2004) prepared by
the Hong Kong Tourism Board, the MICE segment represented only 5.6% of
Hong Kong’s 21.8 million total visitors in 2004. However, the MICE segment
contributed approximately HK$ 7 billion of tourism spending, and the per
capita spending of MICE visitors reached about HK$10,000. This is more than
twice the HK$4,478 spending of the average leisure visitor. In this regard, a
MICE visitor generates more tourism spending than a leisure visitor.
Task 1
1.
Calculate and compare the per capita spending
(spending per person) of a leisure tourist (Penny) and
a business tourist (Ashley).
8
Penny from London, U.K., is planning to visit Hong Kong for 5 days in
December. She has prepared an itinerary for her travel agent. Assume that you
are the travel agent, and that you have to prepare a quotation based on Penny’s
itinerary. List the estimated costs(excluding airfare between London and Hong
Kong)for each item on the itinerary and the grand total.
Accommodations

9
Ashley Gerrard is a reporter from the United Kingdom, and he works for a
major newspaper company in London. He will come to Hong Kong to report on
the WTO Hong Kong Ministerial Conference to be held between December 13
-18. Mr. Gerrard has prepared an itinerary for his travel agent. Assume that
you are the travel agent, and that you have to prepare a quotation based on Mr.
Gerrard’s itinerary. List the estimated costs for each item (excluding return
airfare between London and Hong Kong ) on the itinerary and the grand total.

2.
Who is the “high-yield” tourist in Question 1? What is the percentage
difference between the two tourists’ per capita spending? Based on the
calculation of per capita spending, produce an estimate of the tourism
revenue created by the WTO Hong Kong Ministerial Conference.

indirect sectors of the economy.

【Integrated reporting】 Many people in the community support tourism and
consider that is favorable to economic development. However, while
receiving tourism receipts, we may also encounter social problems resulting
from tourists, such as crowded, traffic congestion, environmental pollution,
problems of carrying capacity, unwanted lifestyles changes and social
diversity, etc.
The WTO Hong Kong Ministerial Conference to be held in December is
considered as business tourism. There will be over 10,000 visitors attending
the Conference. The Secretary for Commerce, Industry and Technology
pointed out that it would cause inconvenience to people living in the vicinity.
However, the government will endeavor to minimize inconvenience to people’s
daily life.
15
1.
The Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre is the WTO Hong
Kong Ministerial Conference’s venue. Do you think the carrying
capacity in Wan Chai can entertain so many visitors? Why? Please collect
information and newspaper clippings on facilities available for MICE
activities in Wan Chai. Explain your findings.
2.
Apart from Wan Chai, will the “inconvenience” mentioned by the
Secretary affect other communities? Why? Please explain.
3.
Other than the negative social impacts mentioned in the news extracts
above, are there any other possible negative impacts which a host country
should not ignore? Please refer to the suggested internet resources on
the next page to identify other types of “inconvenience” caused by
tourism.
