What do we have to offer ? The WTO Hong Kong Ministerial Conference will take place in the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from 13 (Tuesday) to 18 (Sunday) December 2005. It is expected that 11,000 participants will attend the 6-day conference. A Conference is a component of the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions (Conferences) and Exhibitions sector within business tourism, itself a sub-sector of the overall tourism industry. Task 1 1. What do we gain from hosting the WTO Hong Kong Ministerial Conference ? The high-yield potential of MICE visitors According to A Statistical Review of Hong Kong Tourism (2004) prepared by the Hong Kong Tourism Board, the MICE segment represented only 5.6% of Hong Kong’s 21.8 million total visitors in 2004. However, the MICE segment contributed approximately HK$ 7 billion of tourism spending, and the per capita spending of MICE visitors reached about HK$10,000. This is more than twice the HK$4,478 spending of the average leisure visitor. In this regard, a MICE visitor generates more tourism spending than a leisure visitor. Task 1 1.
