1. Forthcoming Meetings –East Midlands Animal Health and Welfare Training Programme
As part of the Land skills programme to improve animal health and farm profitability in the East Midlands a series of training
seminars and work shops on important aspects of cattle and sheep health are being held across the region. The programme is
funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and DEFRA. The Training Programme is co-ordinated and
supported by the East Midlands Rural Development Agency and the National Animal Disease Information Service (NADIS).
We have been asked to organise, host and contribute to these seminars and workshops for our clients. The pilot phase of this
initiative runs for the next 12 months and if it is successful, the funding will continue for at least 2 years thereafter. The topics
for the seminars and workshops are to be chosen by us. However, we would like to arrange meetings on subjects requested by
our clients. Therefore, a list of potential meeting subjects is enclosed. Please let us know which of these subjects would be
most beneficial. Further details about these meetings will follow soon.
2. Housing Reminders
(i) Pneumonia Vaccination
Vaccination of beef calves prior to housing with Rispoval 4 is an excellent, proven way of preventing calf pneumonia. Calves of
12 weeks of age and older need 2 doses 3-4 weeks apart. Younger calves can have Rispoval Intranasal (up the nose) vaccine
from 3 weeks of age. For yearling cattle, IBR is the more common pneumonia problem; hence an IBR vaccine at housing (e.g.
Rispoval IBR or Boviilis IBR) would be advisable. Please give us a call if you wish to discuss vaccination for pneumonia.
(ii) Worming
We have had numerous reports of coughing cattle caused by suspected Lungworm last month. In addition, the generally wetter
spring and summer is likely to see cattle worm burdens (gut worms and lungworms) increasing. Housing offers the ideal
opportunity to treat and remove these worm burdens. We stock the following products;Enovex pour-on (£37.50 ex vat for 2.5 litres). This is an ivermectin based broad spectrum pour-on wormer suitable for
worming any cattle at housing apart from milking cows.
Eprinex pour-on (£343.62 for 5 litres; £180.91 for 2.5 litres; £80.81 for 1 litre all ex vat) This is the only ivermectin type broad
spectrum pour-on wormer with nil milk withdrawal; hence it can be used on milking cows and heifers within 60 days of calving.
Eprinex manufactures Merial are currently running a cash back scheme on Eprinex orders (£25 per 5 litre and
£10 per 2.5 litre). The cash back scheme is available until 30th November. Cash back vouchers are available from
the Lutterworth surgery.
3. Sheep Abortion Vaccine
Since our Newsletter last month, the availability of Sheep Abortion vaccine to prevent Enzootic Abortion (Chlamydia) has
changed again. Enzovax is now available again in all pack sizes (10, 20 or 50 dose boxes). However, Mydiavac is now
unavailable and has been discontinued. Enzovax is a live vaccine which must be given at least 4 weeks before mating. It can be
used at the same time as the toxoplasma vaccine Toxovax (but inject at different sites/different sides of the neck).
4. And Finally, Congratulations to Sarah on becoming Mrs Hicks after her marriage to Andy last month. We wish
them a long and happy marriage.
