To this end, a versatile and scalable synthesis of formyl-substituted benzoxaboroles is described here. A key step is the mono-oxidation of the two hydroxyls in compound 4 by taking advantage of the stable oxaborole ring in non-coordinating solvents, which was devised based on the study of the intramolecular coordination and exchange properties. The structures of all isolated compounds were deduced using spectroscopic and chemical methods. Antioxidative activities of most phenolic compounds were evaluated. Compounds 1 (3,4,2',4'-tetrahydroxy-trans-chalcone), 2 (3,4,2',4'-tetrahydroxy-trans-chalcone-2'-O-beta-D-glucoside), 12 (quercetin), 13 ((+)-dihydroquercetin), and 14 (eriodictyol) showed antioxidative capacities in the DPPH and hydroxyl free-radical assays, with IC50 values of 3.80-6.12 mu g/mL, and 9.24-11.87 mu g/mL, respectively. We have performed a serum metabolic analysis to test the hypothesis that the distinct metabolite profiles of malignant tumors are reflected in biofluids. In this study, we have analyzed the serum metabolites from 64 colorectal cancer (CRC) patients and 65 healthy controls using gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOFMS) and Acquity ultraperformance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (Acquity UPLC-QTOFMS). Orthogonal partial least-squares discriminate analysis (OPLS-DA) models generated from GC-TOFMS and UPLC-QTOFMS metabolic profile data showed robust discrimination from CRC patients and healthy controls. A total of 33 differential metabolites were identified using these two analytical platforms, five of which were detected in both instruments. These metabolites potentially reveal perturbation of glycolysis, arginine and proline metabolism, fatty acid metabolism and oleamide metabolism, associated with CRC morbidity. O-HTCC nanoparticles were prepared with a simple and mild ionic gelation method upon the addition of a sodium tripolyphosphate solution to a low-molecular-weight O-HTCC solution. Highly cationic chitosan nanoparticles were prepared. Bovine serum albumin (BSA), a model protein drug, was incorporated into the nanoparticles. The physicochemical properties of the nanoparticles were determined with transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns. The results showed that increasing the BSA concentration from 1.5 to 2.5 mg/mL promoted the BSA encapsulation efficiency from 57.3% to 87.5% and the loading capacity from 70.2%, to 99.5%. Compared with the chitosan nanoparticles, the O-HTCC nanoparticles had lower burst release. TEM revealed that the BSA-loaded O-HTCC nanoparticles were smaller than the O-HTCC nanoparticles when the BSA concentration was 1.5 mg/mL; SEM showed that the size of the BSA-loaded O-HTCC nanoparticles was mostly affected by the BSA concentration, and the increase in size occurred with the concentration increasing. Thermograms and XRD of the BSA-loaded nanoparticles suggested that polyelectrolyte-protein interactions increased with the BSA concentration increasing and greater chain realignment in the BSA-loaded nanoparticles. We conceive that multi-pathway modulations of the human gut microbial system exerted by traditional Chinese medicines (TCMs) to restore the balance of the gut ecology may account for a large portion of their effectiveness in host during treatment. Such a concept is evidenced by series of studies which have revealed an interactive relationship between gut microflora and TCM, involving the two important aspects: gut microflora-dependent drug metabolism in TCM and gut microflora-targeted modulation of physiological conditions, both of which highlight the significance of gut microflora involvement in the future TCM investigation. The chemical composition and the crystalline state of the as-prepared hollow Na0.15WO3 nanospheres were characterized complementarily, and the hollow structure formation mechanism was proposed. The hollow Na0.15WO3 nanospheres showed large Brunauer-Emment-Teller specific area (33.8 m(2) g(-1)), strong resistance to acids, and excellent ability to remove organic molecules such as dye and proteins from aqueous solutions. Serum samples collected from 4, 10, 18 and 24 month-old rats and TFE-administered rats have been pro. led by LC/MS. Thirty age-related endogenous metabolites were discovered by partial least squares (PLS) and Hotelling's T-2 control chart, among which 25 metabolites were structurally identified by MSn analysis and ten of them were further confirmed via authentic chemicals. All important age-related metabolites, such as unsaturated fatty acids, saturated fatty acids, nucleotides, carnosine, ergothioneine and amino acids, displayed age-related changes, and most of them were reset to a younger level after TFE administration. This study indicated that aging could be characterized by changes of lipid metabolisms and accumulation of free radicals. In the present study, RP55 was further purified using consecutive chromatographic methods for identification of antioxidant peptides. The alpha,alpha-diphenyl-beta-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging effects of peptides were measured at each purification step to evaluate the antioxidant activities. RP55 was first fractionated by anion-exchange chromatography, and three fractions (E1, E2, and E3) were obtained. All of them showed significantly lower scavenging activities compared to RP55, which was very probably due to the remarkable loss of tannin during the separation. Next, the active fraction E2 with higher protein content was sequentially purified by gel filtration chromatography (GFC) and reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC). The purified peptide, of which the median effective dose (ED50) value for DPPH radical scavenging was 0.063 mg/mL, was identified to be Pro-Ala-Gly-Pro-Phe (487 Da) using electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectrometry.
