Side by Side – A Multidisciplinary Approach to the
Treatment of Depression (3 CMTEs)
Saturday, February 28, 2015 Irmo, South Carolina
Approximately 19 million Americans struggle with Major Depression making this disorder the
top cause of disability in adults. Studies conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health
reveal that 70% of cases of persons with depression show marked improvement with the use of
antidepressant medication; however, a combination of medication along with other adjunct
therapies has proven to be statistically significant in the treatment of depression. 1 This CMTE
will present a multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of depression to include diagnostic
criteria for depression, psychotherapeutic approaches for treating depression, the use of
Recreation Therapy in the treatment of depression, and the use of Music Therapy in the
treatment of depression.
Learner Objectives:
1. The participant will be able to discuss the DSM-5 criteria for depression
2. The participant will be able to describe multidisciplinary approaches to treatment including
psychotherapeutic and Recreation Therapy interventions
3. The participant will be able to create music therapy experiences for treating depression
There are no prerequisites to attend this CMTE event. Students are welcome and encouraged to come
