OLA SHOW & SALE OF SUCKLED CALVES The annual OLA show and sale of suckled calves took place at Orkney Auction Mart on Wednesday 29 October 2014. A total of 157 calves were sold and 35 of these came forward for show before judge Frazer Leslie from Shapinsay. Champion calf was a red Limousin cross steer from Mr I Sclater, Fisk-Helia, Breckan, Evie. Mr Sclater also had the Reserve Champion, a black Limousin cross heifer. Both animals were sired by a home-bred Black Limousin bull named “Sclaters Hercules” by “Goldies Black Denver”. The dams of both the champion and reserve are homebred twin cows out of a British Blue cross cow and sired by the popular AI choice for Limousins “Chytodden Conan”. The Champion Steer scaled 375kgs and sold for £1,010 (269.3p) to Mr Irvine of Lenahowe in Sandwick. The Reserve Champion heifer was 350kgs and sold for £1,200 (342.9p) to Mr Baillie, Sebay, Tankerness. This was top gross and kilo price of the day. Top kilo price for steers was attained by Messrs Barton of the Brough in South Ronaldsay for a group of four Charolais crosses scaling 273kgs realising £870 per head (318.7p). Top gross price for steers was £1,020 for a pair of Limousin crosses scaling 395kgs (258.2p) from Fisk-Helia, Evie. All calves sold very well and heifer calves with future breeding potential were in great demand. The 79 steers averaged £879 per head (267.3p) and the 78 heifers averaged £835 per head (242.7p). OLA SALE OF BREEDING STOCK There was a small sale of breeding stock after the calves were sold. Two young British Blue cross cows from J Rendall, Rowland, Holm that are in calf to the Black Limousin bull sold for £2,050 and £1,950. A pair of Simmental cross heifers in calf to the Limousin bull from J E Dick, Midskaill, Egilsay sold for £2,000 and £1,850. Seven Beef Shorthorn cross heifers from G & M Anderton, Harrabrough, South Ronaldsay sold up to £1,100 per head. Four pure Beef Shorthorn heifers from J M Lennie & Co, Nearhouse, Tankerness also sold up to £1,100 per head. Two heifers from B & S Slater, Newbigging, Dounby realised £1,200 for the Aberdeen Angus cross and the British Blue cross made £1,150.
