LESSON PLAN 1 – Graham Wheeler Class level Classroom Lower In the classroom of Road to Argentina Progress expectation I am expecting my students to have learned the various ailments, parts of the body, and examples of remedies that are used to help. The students will be able to construct sentences based on these. They will also have learnt basic grammar in order to explain how, where, and how often the remedies are to be applied. Talking about ailments and remedies Ailments and Remedies Firstly my intention is to teach the class different types of ailments, remedies and associated grammar so that they are able to communicate effectively with themselves and to doctors, or others. I would also like them to have learnt enough vocabulary so that they can talk about various parts of the body, not just the normal standard ones. The class will have learnt names of the different parts of the body, and that of typical ailments most commonly paired by these parts. They will be able to communicate this with grammar, and have the ability to express this information if they should be talking to a doctor or between friends. My understanding of the class, their level of English is that they do not have much vocabulary of the related topic, other than the obvious Latinate words we have borrowed in English. However the remedies are mostly English rooted words so I think this lesson will be valuable to them, and a good mixture of words they might already know, whilst introducing new ones. Cutting edge textbook and the white board. I will photocopy relevant pages to use as handouts, and for exercises to do once they have learnt the vocabulary. The white board is mainly used for the initial brainstorm, and for learning and explaining new vocabulary. To assess the amount the class has learnt, I will ask them first to write five sentences after the brainstorm and grammar session. Following that they will complete an exercise from the textbook, and then we will go through the answers together so that I can correct them if needed. Questions that I will be asking will have to check they have understood the idea of what the lesson is about. For example; Do you take Paracetemol for an infection? Do you put a bandage on your head if you have a broken foot? I feel the lesson went according to plan, there were a few who found it hard to understand some of the ailments, but was quickly fixed. On the whole I rarely adjusted the plan, only to spend a little extra time with individuals who needed it. The material I had prepared for the class was in mind of their level and only had minor problems, explaining grammatical issues. I think the class enjoyed the topic. They often went off on their own conversations debating. The class displayed good attention, giving me the impression they were interested. I allowed talking as long as it’s relative to the topic. There was no need to use the native language of the class, there were no issues that couldn’t be explained in simpler English or by spending more time on it. As always in a group, there are confident and shy people, but none to an extreme. I would recommend to future teachers the use of images and gesticulations to ease the job of explaining ailments and remedies. I think the class went well because I focused on keeping it very basic and structured, as to not go off on wild tangents.
