BEHAVIOUR ITINERANT TEAMS / OUTREACH ELEMENTARY / MIDDLE / SECONDARY Program Description The Itinerant Behaviour Team (Full team is comprised of a Teacher, Youth Worker and Special Education Assistant or specifically, the Outreach Teacher service option), provides services in schools to students experiencing severe social/emotional difficulties. Services may be direct, consultative or a combination of both, including services to students, parents, school personnel and other support personnel. Services to middle and secondary schools will generally focus more on articulation and consultation only. Behaviour Teams are also available for consultation to School-Based Teams, staff development and in-service activities (additional responsibilities as directed by the Director of Student Services). The Team also acts as a consultative resource to all schools for issues related to data collection, identification and documentation of behaviour students. The Outreach Component focuses mainly on a short-term on a short-term caseload for students who are not attending school full-time due to behavioural issues. Referral Process Identification usually begins with the classroom teacher, in consultation with the School-Based Team. Prior to referral to the Itinerant Team, it is expected that all school-based interventions and resources have been exhausted. Interventions at the school level may include school behaviour plans, behaviour contracts, school counselling, parent involvement and schedule/teacher changes. Referrals for the Outreach component come through either the Coordinator – Counselling / Rehabilitation Services or the Director of Student Services Students receiving this service must meet the Ministry definition for students requiring intensive behaviour intervention or students with serious mental illness. The Student Services Referral Form must be completed and signed by the principal and parent. Entrance Criteria At the time of referral, School-Based Teams are requested to provide information regarding previous schoolbased interventions. The Behaviour Team Teacher prioritizes the caseload, in consultation with school team members and District Student Services personnel. Exit Criteria Duration of service will be determined by the School-Based Team and Itinerant Behaviour Team in consultation with the parents. Ultimately, the Itinerant Team Teacher must use his/her discretion in determining the need for continuation of services. The Coordinator of Programs is available to mediate disagreements around this matter. Note: * Teacher release time for consultation is for those elementary students receiving direct ongoing service from the Behaviour Team. * Students arriving from out of district social adjustment or alternate programs should be referred to the Coordinator – Counselling/Rehabilitation Services.
