The time shattered the previous record of 1:56 set by Donato Hanover (October 2006) and Majestic Son (November 2005). “He raced well, but he was not quite as relaxed as I would liked,” said Campbell. “He was strong, and very good here, and got over the track fine. Chuck (trainer Sylvester) changed his shoes as you have to do with any horse coming from the Red Mile. You have to put a little more grab on them but a 2-year-old that can come here and make that adjustment is a good one.” Lucky Chucky and Campbell charging to victory On Oct. 8, Lucky Chucky won his Bluegrass division at the Red Mile by three-quarters of a length over Winning Fireworks in 1:56.2. The bay colt was second for much of the mile before getting room in the stretch to move to the front. “He was up in the bit pretty good,” Campbell said. “He sat in there good at The Red Mile until he got surrounded and then he wanted to go, but there was just no place to go. When he got room, he trotted through very strong and I was happy with the way he raced. We never really got started until we got in the lane, so he trotted home real spiffy.” “We’ve had trouble with him being a little too hyper,” Campbell admitted. “He tries to go too fast and gets out of kilter with his gait. When he’s relaxed and not trying to go too fast, he’s much smoother gaited. But he’s exceptionally honest for a 2-year-old and doesn’t want to run. He’ll kind of hitch and hike, but he’s refused to run so far. Lucky Chucky has won divisions of the Harriman, Peter Haughton elims and his Valley Victory qualifier. His only loss was a third-place finish in the $523,600 Peter Haughton Final on Hambletonian Day at the Meadowlands. Chuck Sylvester trains and co-owns Lucky Chucky along with his daughter Stolzfus, and Neal Goldman of New Jersey.
