Letters of Recommendation (3 Required) A. Coach 3 February 2011 Professor Beeman: An exemplary individual and an ideal candidate for the Conference Carolinas Murphy Osborne Award for outstanding senior student-athletes, Ian Parry receives my highest recommendation. A three-year letterman and starting forward on the Men’s Basketball team, Ian is a multi-faceted young man who possesses impeccable character, integrity, and conviction. A highly-respected leader of his peers, an excellent student, a contributor to the community as a whole, and a generous volunteer of his time, Ian epitomizes the student-athlete ideal. I first crossed paths with Ian when he joined our program in the Fall of 2008. Soon after his arrival on campus, Ian’s conditioning, hard work, and determination made an immediate impression on me. Subsequently, I have found Ian to be a model of consistency; he never misses a workout, practice, or competition, and he approaches all three with equal intensity, exerting maximum effort. Over the past two seasons, Ian has appeared in all forty-seven games we have played, and this season, he has started all eighteen games we have played thus far—he is nothing less than an “iron man.” Ian leads honorably through both the example of his words and, more importantly, the example of his deeds. As evidenced by the fact that he has started every game to date this season, Ian has earned my and my staff’s trust. To date, he is our third leading rebounder, averaging 3.6 per game and is shooting a 44% 2pt. FG% and 79% FT%. In addition, he makes numerous significant contributions that, although they may not appear in a box score, impact our program’s overall success. As appreciative as I am of his many accomplishments on the court, I am far more impressed by Ian’s achievements in the classroom. An exemplary student who epitomizes the student-athlete ideal, Ian’s overall GPA currently stands at 3.60 and his GPA in his major, which is Accounting, stands at an even more impressive 3.87. As a result of his academic performance, Ian has made the Dean’s list every semester in attendance at Belmont Abbey College. In addition, he has been inducted as a full member of Chi Alpha Sigma Athletic Honor Society (for excellence in athletics and academics) and earned Conference Carolinas Academic All – Conference status for the 2009-2010 academic year. And, this past summer, from June through August, Ian secured an internship at BDO USA, LLP (the U.S. member of BDO International Limited, which is the sixth largest accounting firm in the world). As an Audit Intern, he worked with publically traded not-for-profit companies helping them to prepare financial statements. I admire Ian most, however, for his belief that with success comes responsibility. Ian possesses a passion for community service and outreach as exemplified by his participation as a mentor at North Belmont Elementary school the past two years, his volunteering eighty hours over a two week period this past summer at the March of Dimes office in Hickory, NC, and his working with Habitat for Humanity in Huntersville, NC. In addition, Ian served in fall 2009 as Vice-President of Phi Kappa Theta fraternity and helped organize a basketball tournament for Huntersville, NC youth held at St. Mark’s that fall as well as “Gaston Senior Day,” an outing for local senior citizens which was held on the Belmont Abbey’s baseball field this past spring. A leader on the Men’s Basketball team, an excellent student, and a generous volunteer of his time, Ian Parry will be successful in any endeavor or undertaking he pursues. Having had the privilege of coaching him, I confidently assert that Ian exudes a maturity—a seemingly unflappable composure—which is uncommon for a young man his age; he quite literally embodies the phrase “poise under pressure.” Due to his maturity, poise, academic prowess, and selfless concern for others, I assure you there is no stronger, more deserving student-athlete for the Conference Carolinas Murphy Osborne Award. Sincerely, Stephen P. Miss Men's Basketball Coach Belmont Abbey College B. Athletic Director Selection Committee Murphy Osborne Award February 18, 2011 Dear committee members, It is with great confidence I write this recommendation on behalf of Ian Parry, student athlete at Belmont Abbey College. I submit this letter based on two primary reasons – my great respect for the Conference Carolinas Murphy Osborne Award award and my high regard for Ian. I have had the great fortune of observing Ian this past year as Director of Athletics at Belmont Abbey College. Ian has dedicated himself to his commitment as a student-athlete. His dedication to his studies as an Accounting major, and to his athletic obligations, is unwavering. He is most proud of his commitments and it certainly shows in his efforts. Dedicated student-athletes are notorious for putting in long hours working nights and weekends, running from sun up to sun down. This describes Ian without fail. He works tirelessly and without hesitation or complaint as evidenced by his 3.60 cumulative grade point average and his 3.87 major specific grade point average. Ian has made a tremendous impact on our local community through his involvement with organizations such as March of Dimes and Habitat for Humanity. He volunteers his time working as a Mentor with young students at North Belmont Elementary as well as with senior citizens during the annual Gaston Senior Day. Ian is a three-year letterman on the varsity Men’s Basketball team and has made a significant impact on our basketball program as a starting forward. More important, however, than his tangible basketball skills, which are significant, are the intangible benefits Ian offers his teammates and the basketball program. His servant-leadership attitude, positive outlook and unwavering work ethic have positioned him as a leader among the young men he works with every day. He has earned the respect, trust and leadership granted him over the past three years. I appreciate and respect Ian as an outstanding young man – in the classroom, in the community and on the court. It is without hesitation I recommend he be honored with the Conference Carolinas Murphy Osborne award. Warm regards, Quin Monahan Athletics Director Belmont Abbey College C. An additional letter written by a member of the school’s faculty or staff with special knowledge of the nominee February 18, 2011 Professor Beeman: This is a letter of recommendation for Ian Parry for the Conference Carolinas Murphy Osborne Award for outstanding senior student-athlete. I have known Ian for approximately three years. He has been in several of my courses. He is an outstanding student, the type professors look forward to having in class. He is eager to learn and willing to work hard to be successful. He attends class regularly, comes well prepared and makes a positive contribution to class discussions. His class presentations are well organized and informative. Two of his greatest strengths are his ability to listen and eagerness to learn. He reads and comprehends difficult materials with admirable ability. Ian’s academic achievements are substantiated by his present overall GPA of 3.60 and his accounting major GPA of 3.87. He has been on the Dean’s list every semester at Belmont Abbey College. Outside recognition came last year when he was inducted into the Chi Sigma Athletic Honor Society and earned Conference Carolinas Academic All-Conference status. In 2010 Ian worked as a summer Audit Intern with BDO USA, LLP in Charlotte, NC. He worked on-site with various public, private and not-for-profit clients. It was an experience which helped him grow intellectually, professionally and personally. After completing his education, Ian plans to work as an accountant and become a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA). Ian is a very intelligent and conscientious young man. He is a self starter, highly motivated, and has excellent time management skills. In addition to being a full time student he is an outstanding athlete, a community volunteer, and he is actively involved in student activities. In regards to his athletic contribution I can only testify to what I have seen. On the court Ian is a team player. He plays with enthusiasm and intensity and even in the clutches he exemplifies good sportsmanship. Ian is very generous in volunteering his time and energy to community efforts. Over the past two years he has volunteered as a mentor at North Belmont Elementary School. In spring 2009 Ian worked with Habitat for Humanity. In 2009-2010, while serving as VP for Phi Kappa Theta fraternity, he helped organize a youth basketball tournament and Gaston Senior Day, an outing for local senior citizens. Summer 2010 he worked two full weeks for the March of Dimes. Ian is a most deserving student-athlete. He has a positive attitude; he doesn’t talk about it, he just does it. I have found him to be honest and trustworthy at all times. He has managed to achieve as a student and as an athlete while participating in student activities and volunteering in his community. Ian is well liked by his peers and works well in a team setting. He does exemplify “Life in the Balance” and I give him my highest recommendation for the Conference Carolinas Murphy Osborne Award for outstanding senior student-athlete. Sincerely, Dr. Angela Blackwood, Chair, Department of Accounting Belmont Abbey College
