Daily Weather Changes
Standard: E.ES.01.21: Compare daily changes in the weather related to temperature
(cold, hot, warm, cool); cloud cover (cloudy, partly cloudy, foggy)
precipitation (rain, snow, hail, freezing rain); wind (breezy, windy, calm).
Grade Level: 1
Objectives:
After completion of the lesson, students will be able to:
- Define temperature, precipitation, cloud cover and wind
- Compare daily changes in weather
- Give a weather report that shows daily changes in weather
List of Materials
- Observation sheets for the Explore section of the lesson
- 10 weather report worksheets per student (two for each day of the school week)
- Posters depicting cloud cover, precipitation, temperature and wind (terms and
definitions on the back of the poster)
- Access to the outdoors
- Weather appropriate clothing
Previous Knowledge:
- Basic knowledge of clouds, wind, precipitation and temperature.
Engage the Learner
- Teacher begins the lesson wearing their favorite weather appropriate clothing (ear
muffs, holding umbrella, rain boots). Teacher talks about their favorite kind of
weather.
- Ask the students: What’s you favorite kind of weather? Why?
- Hand out a weather observation worksheet and inform the students that they will be
recording their weather observations outside.
Explore the Concept
- Teacher will take students outside to observe the current weather.
- Students will record what kind of weather they see and feel around them on the
worksheet provided by the teacher.
Explain
Teacher will review previously learned terms by showing posters (Temperature, cloud
cover, wind, and precipitation)
1) Temperature

Hot: Extremely warm weather, usually in the summer

Warm: Weather that occurs usually in spring or fall, in between hot and cool

Cold: Extremely cool weather that usually occurs in winter

Cool: Weather usually experienced in fall or spring, warmer than cold
temperature, but not warm weather
2) Cloud cover

Cloudy: the sky is covered with clouds

Partly cloudy: Clouds cover some of the sky

Foggy: Low, thin clouds; just above the ground
3) Wind

Windy: Strong moving air

Breezy: A light current of air; a gentle wind

Calm: Air is almost still or not moving
4) Precipitation

Rain: Water droplets from clouds above

Snow: Frozen water droplets (ice crystals) that fall when it is cold out

Hail: Precipitation in the form of round or oddly-shaped pellets of ice larger
than a pencil eraser

Freezing rain: Rain that freezes when it hits the surface
Introduce students to weather changes:
-
How does weather change? (hot to cold, rainy to snowy, clear to cloudy)
-
How can weather changes affect us or the world around us?
o Plants can freeze and die and the spring time because of a change of
weather. What kind of change in the weather would cause that? (warm to
cold weather)
o There can be Icy roads and sidewalks with weather change. What kind of
change in weather would cause that? (cool and rainy to cold and snowy)
o Snow melts and forms small bodies of water on the ground and can
sometimes cause flooding. What kind of weather change would do that?
(cold and snowy to warm)
Elaborate on the Concept
Inform students that they will receive a worksheet in which they will observe weather
changes for a week.

The students will take weather observations in the morning and in the afternoon
for one week. They will not the difference between morning and afternoon
weather.

Each day a group of students will be responsible for the daily weather report at
the end of the day. Groups are based on class size (3-4 members per group).
The students will share their weather observations with the class and tell how the
weather changed from morning to afternoon.

Hand out two worksheets per day. The whole class will record their weather
observations everyday of the week but only one group will give a weather report
each day.
Evaluate
Students will be evaluated on their participation in the weather reporting activity, the
completion of the explore worksheet and their weekly weather report worksheets.
