GETTING STARTED WITH THE SBL ELECTRONIC DELIVERY SYSTEM Dear student of the SBL, Welcome to the SBL, we hope you will have a very enriching learning experience. The SBL electronic delivery system, or eds online, is your access to a wealth of information and this is our primary communication medium. This document was written to help you to get started with the eds online. What is the eds online? The EDS online is a collaborative e-learning environment, that is used for communication purposes by the SBL. Participants use this environment to obtain programme and course material, submit assignments, etc. This system is available 24 hours, seven days per week. The eds online will launch early in January 2006. You should receive the invitation email to register on the eds during this period. The eds online registration process allows you access to eds online, and is in addition to your formal application process. To register on the EDS online, you need a computer that complies to the minimum requirements, such as a working Internet connection, Internet Explorer, etc. On your internet browser, go to http://www.sbleds.ac.za and click on the “New Registrations (Students)” link, and follow the relevant steps as indicated on the website. You will require a student number to complete the registration process. At the end of the registration process, an indication of your username and password will be displayed. Please write the username and password down. Please note that usernames and passwords are case sensitive. Once you have registered, you should receive an eds online confirmation email, indicating your username and password. Return back to the eds online site, and select “Access eds online”, which will prompt you for your username and password. In the event that you do not receive the registration confirmation email, try to access the eds online environment, since the email might not have been delivered to you. If you still cannot login, please contact the Eds support staff. (See contact numbers below) If you require assistance at any stage (during registration or using the eds online), please click on the green “Help” button, which is located on the top right hand corner of the web page displayed in the Internet Explorer window. The Help facility is context sensitive, in the sense that each page has its own help section, and it differs from page to page. It is necessary that participants read the help sections to get familiarized with the functions and general usage of the eds online. The following table represents the most common problems encountered during the registration process and the potential solutions: Problem I did not receive an email invitation to register on the eds online Solution Contact your programme administrator to confirm your email address. This email will not be resent, since it covers the basic registration process covered in this letter. You will still be able to register, by following the above indicated process regarding the registration on the eds online. My computer does not comply to the minimum hardware requirements I cannot see the eds online web site You need to upgrade your computer Ensure that you are accessing www.sbleds.ac.za. Some companies do not allow their employees to access the eds web site during office hours. Furthermore your I am prompted for a username and password, when trying to access the web site (http://www.sbleds.ac.za) I do not have my student number to be able to register I have registered but did not receive my confirmation after 6 hours I did receive my username and password, but it does not work My username and password works fine, but what am I supposed to do now? Can I register over the weekend and from any computer? I keep on getting prompted to change my resolution, web browser and been prompted to accept a certificate? I only see some sections of the web pages on the screen. I am not sure or do not have a “Java Runtime” environment I do not have a navigator on the left hand side of the screen Internet connection might be down. It also might be that the page seems slow. You may also need to require permission from your IT department or ISP. Your organization has a firewall that requires authentication. Refer this problem to the IT Department within your organisation. Contact the relevant programme administrator at the SBL The confirmation email was most likely blocked, or the email address that you indicated was incorrect. If you have written down the username and password, during the registration process, first try to access the eds online, before calling the eds online Support Desk. Make sure that you are typing the username and password exactly as indicated. The username and password are case sensitive. If this still does not work, use the functions on the web site to obtain your authentication information. You may also call the eds online Support Desk for assistance. Click on the “Help” link, on the top right hand side of the Internet Explorer Window, to familiarize yourself with the web site. Yes, the registration process is automated, and you will be able to register at any time, or any day. You may register from one computer, and use any other computer to access the eds online. It is highly recommended that you do change your screen resolution and web browser, as indicated. You must accept the IBM certification, by clicking on “Yes” to be able to utilize the full functionality of this system. You must “Maximize” your Internet Explorer screen In any case, use the links after authentication that relates to the “Non Java” system. The same information is displayed, but only differently. You are trying to access the programme information in the Java enable environment, while you do not have a Java runtime environment installed. Use the “Non Java” links.
