We Are Well Able! March 11, 2015 Dale & Jeannie Daly Realizing that in the past you’ve both heard sermons as well as read the biblical account on numerous occasions on what I felt led to write on, I would ask that you don’t shut me down before re-reading it yet another time for there is something valuable and timely for the day we are living in. The biblical text I would ask you to turn to is the story found in the book of Numbers, chapter 13, of the twelve spies sent into the land of Canaan. To set up the story we read that the Lord spoke to Moses saying, “Send men to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel…” (vs. 2). The following verses tell us of the names of the twelve men who were selected to go to “see what the land is like; whether the people who dwell in it are strong or weak, few or many; whether the land they dwell in is good or bad; whether the cities they inhabit are like camps or strongholds; whether the land is rich or poor; and whether there are forests there or not” (vss. 18-19). Verse 3 tells us that Moses then “sent from the Wilderness of Paran according to the command of the Lord, all of the men who were heads of the children of Israel,” which numbered twelve men from the various tribes. The twelve were gone for a period of time and after forty days of “spying out the land,” they returned with their report. Verse seventeen continues on in telling the reader of their initial report. “We went to the land where you sent us. It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. NEVERTHELESS (emphasis mine) the people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very large; moreover we saw the descendants of Anak there. The Amalekites dwell in the land…” (vs’s. 27-29a). There is one major tactic the enemy uses in both Christian’s as well as non-Christian lives. The devil is fighting against mankind trying to place fear in to the lives of people on earth. The ten major fears of mankind today rated from one to ten are: Fear of flying; Public speaking; Fear of heights; Fear of the dark; Intimacy; Fear of death; Fear of failure; Fear of rejection; Fear of spiders, and number ten, the fear of commitment. However, as you are reading this CRA Moment and have come to this line, and if any of the above is a fear in your life, you have a choice today that you can make. That choice is to either agree to continue in the fear of, one through ten, or to agree with the Word of God and move away from that fear. Here’s the choice: Leviticus 26:17, “You shall not fear them: for the Lord your God He shall fight for you.” Joshua 1:9, “Be not afraid, neither be dismayed: for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Psalm 24:9, “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou are with me.” Psalm 27:1, “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” Psalm 56:4, “In God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.” Psalm 91:5, “You shall not be afraid for the terror by night, nor for the arrow that fly’s by day.” Jeremiah 42:11, “Be not afraid….says the Lord: for I am with you to save you.” And in the words of Jesus in John 14:27, “Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid,’ because “perfect love casts out fear” (I John 4:18). My friends, these are not simply verses written down for this CRA Moment to take up space! They are verses from the God of all gods; the Lord of all lords; the King of all kings, for you and me….especially for the day in which we live where the devil is firing his biggest cannons of fear our way. Don’t fail to add to the list that “Greater is He that is in you, than he (the devil….my adding) that is in the world” (I John 4:4). In the story of Numbers 13, Moses had already received from God the word that the land of Canaan was a “good and large land, a land flowing with milk and honey” (Ex. 3:8), and furthermore, Moses had told the people of the goodness of the land in Exodus 13:5. What’s not to believe when God has said it? In four short words I’ll give you the answer to that question: To agree with God and to determine…..here then are the four brief words…. “We are well able.” Able to go and do everything the Lord has said for us to do. “The Lord is my helper, and I will not fear what man shall do unto me” (Hebrews 13:6). What a Promise!! Out of the twelve spies that returned, according to Numbers 13:32, ten came back with a “bad report.” A report of fear, a report of intimidation, a report of, we’re not able, that we’re like grasshoppers. However, there were two that were not intimidated by the enemy, and their report was, “If the Lord delights in us, then He will bring us into this land and give it to us, and land which flows with milk and honey” (14:8). And He did! Remember these three truths: (1) God rules! (2) He always rules! (3) When He chooses, He will overrule! And trusting in Him we are well able!!
