MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY POLICY Purpose To establish guidelines that ensure the safe operation of motor vehicles while on Agency business. Scope This policy affects and applies to all Agency employees who drive agency vehicles or transportation clients. Policy To ensure the safe operation of Agency-owned vehicles, personally owned vehicles used for Agency business, and vehicles rented at Agency expense, employees are to adhere to the following policy under t hose circumstances. Failure to do so will result in corrective action, up to and including termination. Compliance with applicable laws – All employees must comply with all traffic laws at all times. Seat belts/shoulder harness – All employees will use seat belts/shoulder harnesses at all times. All vehicles will be equipped with seat belts/shoulder harnesses. All passengers are to be told to us the seat belts/shoulder harnesses. Intoxication – Employees will be physically fit at all times when operating any vehicle. Employees may not operate a vehicle within eight of consuming any alcohol. Employees taking a prescription or over-the-counter medication, which may affect their ability to drive, will not drive. Employees may never take illegal drugs and operate a vehicle. Employees who violate this policy will be subject to corrective action, up to and including termination. Safety training – Each employee who is assigned driving responsibilities will attend and successfully complete a first aid course, including CPR for adults and infants. Van drivers are required to take all safety training provided by the NC Department of Transportation. Current license – All employees will maintain a current, valid driver’s license. All commercial drivers will maintain a current, valid commercial license. Proof of valid driver’s license must be submitted to the Agency every twelve months. Examination of driving record – Every year, employee’s driving records will be examined. Any commercial driver who has nay moving violation will be reprimanded and, depending on the violation, subject to corrective action, up to and including termination. 02/12/16 116099048 1/2 Accident reports- A complete, accurate, written accident report will be submitted within two hours of any accident, unless the employees is physically or mentally unable to do so. Insurance – Employees receiving mileage reimbursement are to obtain and maintain motor vehicle insurance as required by applicable state law. Proof of such coverage must be submitted to the Agency ever twelve months. Inspection of vehicles – Employees are to conduct visual inspections of vehicles prior to operation, in accordance with the instructions received in the safety training courses. Safety equipment – Each vehicle shall be equipped with the safety equipment listed in the training material. Coordination with other policies and applicable law – Employees are subject to the Agency’s corrective action policy, its safety policy and its alcohol and drug policy, while operating a vehicle.
