Parent Evaluation of HOORAY FOR HISTORY assembly - Friday 10th January 2014 We would like to thank the 20 parents who joined us for this assembly. These are their comments about what they experienced: 1. What did you learn about our school today? Very well behaved children with a good grasp of school rules and respect for their teachers. Enthusiastic learners, confident learners, good presentational skills. Lovely to see a really interactive head teacher. They are well behaved children and the teachers take pride in their pupils. How well the children encourage and support each other and they all seemed genuinely interested in each other’s work That the children behave well and enjoy learning Different techniques of learning Very hands on The school encourages fun learning and involves the whole school. Very well behaved, respectful attitude from both children and the staff towards each other It was very interesting learning about all the different year’s topics and lovely to hear the children talking about everything they have learnt. I was very impressed with their knowledge The behaviour of the children was very good All children were well behaved and seemed to enjoy listening to the assembly The children really engage in all aspects/types of learning and are proud of their achievements The majority of the history displays were from homework and things they created at home. They obviously have learnt a great deal during school and it would be nice to see more of the work completed during school time..(The school apologises for any misunderstanding as the only pieces of homework was from one child in Year 3 and the 4J group.) The school is very integrated and the relationships throughout the year levels is very impressive. Its’ shown all the different aspects of learning that you use. What brave soldiers the children are – standing in front of all… Each year learnt a different subject in History, castles, Victorians, Ancient Egypt, Tudors, World War II 2. What did you learn about our HISTORY curriculum? Very comprehensive – Various from WWII, Richard III, Victorian Times to Ancient Egypt. Fact based and informative. The children made a rather “dry” subject live “History” rather enjoyable. It is varied and that the children enjoyed learning the topics. How people lived in different ages, how they communicated, how they dressed. The variety of the work/topics and ways of learning eg. Practical and written. The depth of the learning achieved Wide range of topics There is a wide range of learning and it encourages learning suitable for the individual child and make it fun That the children learned in so many different ways and presented their work in many different formats Lots of styles of learning. Each year group had lots of ideas to suit individual styles That the children enjoy learning in many different styles A very varied curriculum across Years 1 to 6. Children clearly enjoyed learning about History and taking part in the assembly. That the children learn about the past and what is relevant to how they live today Very varied and very appropriate for the different levels in their years of learning Subjects are learnt in a variety of teaching and learning styles 3. What do you think that the children had learnt about HISTORY throughout the school? Do you think that there was a progression of knowledge and skills from Year 1 to Year 6? The children learnt a lot. Singing helped one of the school years (Year 3) and a visit for the Tudors to Layer Marney Tower. Yes, the presentation did show the progression the children are making There is a good mix of practical and research with more in depth research and detail in higher years and greater use of technology Thought the whole assembly was brilliant. Mrs Mitchell did a very good job of helping prompt the children. Yes. Definite progression. The children learnt about different cultures and different stages of history. Did the Year 6 boys take part as none in the assembly showing work! It was clear that the higher years learnt and presented their wok in a much less structured way and were expected to learn a lot more on their own. There was a good progression of learning throughout the school years. All the children had great understanding of their topic Yes, you can see progression, both in learning and confidence They had learnt everything from castles to Tudors, Victorian time to Egyptian times. There was definite progression as the castle project was quite simple to more detailed eras. Also, making a castle is a great way to help children visualise what they are learning. Everything the children made was great. Lots of information was learnt in all the topics. Good progression Yes, very much so – from Castles to WWII. The children demonstrated their grasp on their respective topic area – through project based presentations; answering questions and clear and thorough explanation The topic homework each week relies on the parents helping their child to research, make or create different things at home. What is not clear is what the child learns at school relating to each topic – particularly years 2, 3 and 4. 4. What were your thoughts about how well the children behaved as they came into assembly? (1 is low, 5 is high) 100% of parents scored the children’s behaviour as a 5 when they came into assembly. 5. What were your thoughts about how well the children behaved during the assembly? (1 is low, 5 is high) 100% of parents scored the children’s behaviour as a 5 during the assembly was excellent. 6. Any further comments: Thoroughly enjoyable. I also think that the children enjoyed the presentations and the research done surrounding the topic areas I always enjoy these assemblies but I think it is such a shame that the parents of those children involved do not get the chance to see their own child as these assemblies are obviously planned in advance I think that parents should be invited to class assemblies. Many 3SR parents were disappointed not to be invited to the 3SR Egyptian’s assembly Good assembly Great assembly Very impressed. This is my first themed assembly and I thoroughly enjoyed it Would be nice to see your own child show their work Would like to see toilet breaks made smaller. Half of them went Keep up the good work! Next Steps a. Ensure that boys and girls are represented in the assembly. b. Make it clear which learning has taken place in school and what has been achieved as part of the homework c. Let parents know at the start of the year which class assemblies they are invited to
