CONTEMPLATIVE LEADERS IN ACTION (CLA)

A faith-based leadership program for Jesuit-educated alumni

_____________________________________________

Overview

Thank you for your interest in CLA! Magis, a program at Seattle University for all Jesuit-educated alumni in the Puget Sound region, invites you to join other Jesuit-educated emerging leaders as part of this exciting two-year cohort that will journey together to become more just and humane leaders in their work, families and communities. Through a series of monthly meetings, discussions, readings, and reflections, you will gain a deeper understanding about the intersection of faith and leadership, as well as acquire tools from the Ignatian tradition to guide decision-making. The cohort may also decide to gather informally for faith sharing, service, or community building. We hope that by the end of your CLA experience, you will have received tools for faith-centered leadership, and a supportive community to help lead you to action.

By providing both spiritual formation and secular leadership training, the CLA program is unique and intentionally goes where other leadership or spirituality programs for young adults have not. It is our hope that participants will:

• build a network of peers in various occupations

• develop relationships with senior professionals in various fields

• learn Jesuit/Ignatian techniques for making good decisions and for praying

• polish their communication and leadership skills

• reflect on their strengths, growth areas, and role in the world

• discuss the current state of our world and discern where and how they want to lead

It is our goal that the CLA cohort will represent diverse professions such as business, education, healthcare, law, government, education, and non-profit organizations. Further, we hope that participants will have diverse backgrounds, yet will share certain key characteristics: a capacity for self-reflection, work experience, a personal commitment to serve the common good, the potential to make a substantial positive impact on society, and the willingness to pursue continued spiritual and professional growth. We seek individuals who care about their faith and seek ways to live that faith through their various professions, whether as bankers, in church ministries, or as parents. Finally, CLA is open to Jesuit-educated and affiliated alumni of all faiths, but with an understanding that the program is rooted in Ignatian spirituality, Jesuit mission and Christian ethical practice, prayer and tradition.

Who

The ideal CLA participants are Jesuit-educated or affiliated alumni in their 20’s and 30’s who live in the Puget Sound area and want to explore ways of becoming better leaders and how to integrate their faith and work lives. If you have questions regarding whether you are eligible to participate in this program please contact Magis Director, Brooke Rufo Hill at rufohilb@seattleu.edu

.

The CLA cohort will be facilitated by Magis staff, a Jesuit Chaplain, and the CLA Program Coordinator. We look forward to journeying with you for the next two years!

Monthly Group Gatherings Second Tuesday of the Month beginning in September 2014 6pm -9pm | Seattle University (excluding the summer months of July & August) In addition, December’s meeting will be a combined gathering and celebration with the wider

CLA community (CLA1, CLA2, and the CLA Advisory Team).| These meetings will include dinner and various activities such as discussions on readings and presentations from guest speakers and experts on topics ranging from Ignatian Spirituality to servant leadership, and cultural competency development to Catholic Social Teaching, and the Enneagram to Emotional Intelligence. To get an idea of what monthly CLA gatherings will look like, please reference Magis’ CLA website at http://www.seattleu.edu/magis/programs/leadership/cla/ . While some topics are subject to change, the curriculum will be similar to that of the 2013-2015 cohort.

Social Justice Project During year 2 of CLA, participants will lead and engage in a social justice project (SJP) with fellow cohort members. The cohort will be assigned small groups, pick an area of social justice concern, and design and implement a sustainable project during the second year of CLA. The SJP will integrate topics from year one, provide opportunities for leadership and group work learnings, and serve as a capstone project.

Social Justice Projects will require commitment, teamwork, and meeting outside of

CLA monthly gatherings with a small group on a regular basis to carry out planning and implementation.

Mentoring, Service, & Spiritual Direction The cohort will be invited to gather together in service, to partner with mentors in their respective fields, and/or to receive optional spiritual direction in the second year of the program.
