PREPARING FOR YOUR ORAL PRESENTATION IN SPA 202 According to your teacher’s directives, you will have to prepare and research information (see above) about a Spanish speaking country (Perú, México, Argentina,….) and give a presentation of your findings. You will be expected to use Spanish throughout your presentation, and will have to provide a brief summary and key vocabulary of your oral presentation to your classmates You can either do your presentation: a) on your own (7 to 10 minutes) b) in pairs (12 to 15 minutes) A/ Planning the presentation • • • • • • • • Know your topic – become an expert Develop each point with specific details or examples Plan to involve the audience and maintain eye contact with your audience Plan to use visual aids* Don’t speak too fast; you want the audience to understand you Make only outline notes (a penalty will be given for reading from notes) Respect the time limit (a penalty will be given for under or over length presentations) Read the marking scheme (available on the CEAL webpage under Additional Languages) *Visual aids Visual aids (maps, photos, film clips, graphs, diagrams, and charts) can enhance a presentation. Keep visual aids simple and uncluttered. Use colour and contrast for emphasis but use them in moderation Use a font large enough to be seen from the back of the room If using PowerPoint, strongly resist the temptation to use dramatic slide transitions B/ The introduction 1. 2. 3. 4. Greet the audience Introduce yourself Explain the purpose of your talk Outline the talk (your main points) C/ Getting the audience’s attention FROM THE START • • • • • Use a real life event Get the audience to do something Surprise them with facts and figures Use humour Ask a question D/ The body of the presentation • • Plan to get the audience involved Use your body language and maintain eye contact with the audience © CEAL SPA 202 E/ The conclusion 1. A brief summary of the most attractives things of your chosen country 2. The final close: a question, a point or an idea which you want the audience to take away and think further about F/ Extra delivery tips Speak in a clear, audible voice – loud enough to be clearly heard from the back row. Make frequent eye contact with the audience. Really look at the audience as you talk to them. Engaging them directly with your eyes transfers a little bit of your energy to them and keeps them focused on your content. Making eye contact says that you are in charge of the room and for a presentation – that’s what you want. If you use slides or PowerPoint avoid the tendency to speak to the screen instead of to the audience. Be so familiar with your visual aids that the only reason you look at them is to point something out. Never turn your back on the audience and try to avoid walking in front of the projector Adhere strictly to your time limit. You will be surprised how quickly the time goes. Show some enthusiasm.
