equipped with the areas of Radiology, Surgical Minor Operating and

RADIOLOGY NURSE
Job Description:
 As member of the nursing team, participates in
establishing a good working environment in which
patients receive high standard of care.

Ensures that new untrained staffs allocated to the
department are given appropriate teachings,
support and guidance in accordance with the
department objectives and continuous assessments.

Takes objective roles in maintaining effective
communication with all disciplines, patients and
relatives.

Participates in introducing all new members of staffs
and untrained nurses to the department routine and
in professional counseling of staffs as required.

Participates in the care, custody and administration
of medicines in accordance with the hospital policy
and procedure.

Takes responsibility for ensuring safe lifting
techniques.

Maintains the safety and well being of patient and
staffs in accordance with the health and safety
policy.

Ensures that all legal and clinical documents are
written accurately and legibly.
Maintains the accurate collection of data in relation
to patient activity in order that the statistics maybe
accurately compiled.
Maintains necessary equipments and supplies in the
ward or department in order to carryout nursing
care with efficiency and safety.
Support in the establishments of a good working
atmosphere and in making the most effective use of
staff supplies and services.
Understand and become competent to assist with
the various radiological procedures.
Ensures thorough understanding and adequate
supplies during examinations of various types of
angiographic interventional and invasive
equipments such as catheters, guide wires,
angiographic sets, drainage sets, biopsy equipments
etc. used during certain radiographic procedures.
Ensures that the established procedures for checking
and restocking radiology department emergency
code blue crash cart are adhered to.
Have a good understanding of the procedure and
drugs used to combat any medical emergency
within radiology department particularly associated
with contrast media.
Assists in the giving of various contrast media.
Ensures that correct immediate pre and post
examination care of the patient occurs with
particular attention before and after radiographic
procedures which may involve sedation
and
anesthesia.
Assists in the preparation of patients which may
necessitate bowel washout, insertion of naso-gastric
tube, small bowel enema tubes and catheters.
Ensure adherence to establish infection and control
policy and procedures particularly to sterile or
aseptic procedure preparation and preparation of
soiled instruments for C.S.S.D.
Lists of radiographic procedures I performed with
radiologist and radiographer:












1. Ascending Urethrogram – inserted urinary
catheter into the urethra with balloon inflated
aseptically.Assisting the radiologist in the
injection of contrast through the catheter
while taking rapid spots of films in all angles
desired.
2. Barium Swallow/ meal – Instructed the patient
to ingest an ample mouthful of barium and
spots films of the upper and lower esophagus
are taken in different positions.
3. Small Bowel Enema – assisting the radiologist in
the injection of contrast and patient placed in
different positions.
4. Gastrograffin Study - patient is given
gastrograffin while series of x-rays one.
5. Barium Enema – inserted rectal catheter and
connected to barium sulfate drip, Unclamp
the drip to run into the lower bowel and
radiologist commences the Series of x-rays
studies. Then document and sign.
6. T – Tube Cholangiogram – assisting in the
injection of contrast gradually via T – tube in
site under the screen control and films are
taken by radiologist.
7. Dacrocystogram – assisting the
ophthalmologist in the insertion of lacrimal
needle while syringe is attaché in it and
injctiond of contrast is done
while series of x-rays is done.
8. Hysterosalpingogram – Assist the ob-gyne in
the insertion of the catheter in the Cervix and
connected to the syringe with contrast. Then
injected while series of x-rays done.
9. Intravenous Pyelography – cannula is inserted
and contrast is injected.
10. Maturating Cystourethrogram – inserted
urinary catheter and connected to urograffin
30% as drip.series of x-rays done by the
radiographer.
11. Venogram – Inserted cannula , assess the
patient for any allergies and
asthma and contrast is injected while series of
x-rays done.
12. Nephrostomy Tube Insertion – Preparation of
the instruments needed, skin preparation
done, assist the consultant radiologist in the
whole procedure by lending the appropriate
instruments needed, compression done on the
site and covered.
13. Ultrasound/CT Guided Drainage Aspiration –
Seek for the consent and coagulation profile
of the patient, position and drape properly,
prepare all the necessary equipments and
lend to the doctor while the procedure is
doing. Compression done and covered the
site. Document and signed.
14. Percutaneous Transhepatic Cholangiography
– secure for the consent and coagulation
profile, skin preparation done, prepare
anesthesia, skin preparation done, lending the
instruments to the doctor, guide wires and
catheters, compression done and area
covered, document and sign.
15. Angiography – Assisting the radiology
consultant in the injection of contrast into the
vascular system to outline specified blood
vessels accompanied by rapid changing films
on the fluoroscopic screen which record the
passage of contrast media through the
vascular tree. Preparing all the instruments,
guide wires, and catheters, and lending it to
the doctor while the procedures is going.
Then, compression is done and area covered.
Document and signed.
16. Thallium Exercise Testing – Securing the
consent from the patient or relative, weighing
the patient, changing the proper gown for the
patient, check the blood pressure and record,
insertion of cannula , keep besides the patient
during the whole procedure.
17. Thallium Dobutamine Testing - Check the
weight, blood pressure of the patient and
record, changing proper gown, position
properly, prepare the infusion pump with the
soluset filled with 20 ml of Dextrose 5% and
incorporated with dobutamine 125mg,
Calculate the rate according to the patient
weight, checking the blood pressure every
half of each stages, observe for any untoward
reactions, administer Atropine Sulfate
according to the physician’s order, prepare
emergency medicines, advise the patient for
the delay scans, give proper instructions,
document and sign.

Preparing all the instruments as well as assisting the
doctor for minor cases like:

b.) removal of foreign body under local
anesthesia.
c.) incision of drainage of abscess
d.) Suturing of cut wounds after trauma
e.) Excision of lipomas, granulomas, masses.
f.) Removal of skin tags and warts through
cauterization.
In trauma cases caused by car accidents, or fall
down : sudden objective procedures and routines
like taking the vital signs, intravenous insertion
giving oxygen inhalation, immobilizing fractured
part of the body by putting a splint, extraction of
blood sample for investigations, suctioning of blood
and secretions, and ambu bagging connecting to
the oxygen.
