A note about Writer’s Notebooks: I grade Writer’s Notebooks once at the end of
the marking period. It is your responsibility to make sure that you have every entry
completed. You are responsible to complete 3 sides of paper in order to get an A.
This notebook is worth two test grades. Do not worry about this writing being
completed ideas or essays; your thoughts should be pouring out of your heads and
onto the paper. These are not completed pieces. Most of all have fun with it! Try to
keep your hand moving for the entire 15 minutes…

Write for 15 minutes about the following topic or whatever you would like in your
writer’s notebook.
Describe, in detail, a tiny defect-a scab on your elbow, a loose button, a chip on your
tooth, a pimple on your nose, a pimple on someone else’s nose, a rattle in the car door,
a scuff on your shoe, a dent in a can of corn, a knob on the television, a stuck zipper, a
hangnail, a crack in a cup, a scratch on your sunglasses, a tear in the page of a book, a
broken hook on an earring, or…? Tell the world more than it ever wanted to know
about this tiny defect.

Write for 15 minutes about the following topic or whatever you would like in your
writer’s notebook.
In Robert Frost’s poem “Fire and Ice,” he ponders whether the world will end in fire
and ice. How do you think the world will end-ice age, global warming, Biblical
apocalypse, or? Explain.
Poetry Fun
Exercise One:
Think of an experience that didn’t go well for you. Maybe you tried to glue
something heavy onto your wall, or make a cake without a recipe, or play tennis without
an opponent, or have a party with your dog. Imagine that a friend or sibling is about to
try the same thing. Write a poem of advice on what not to do. Feel free to exaggerate.
For example:

Don’t put in the eggshells
Don’t try to take the sugar out with your fingers when you put too much in
Don’t crush a candy bar with a potato masher and try to use it for icing…

Write for 15 minutes about the following topic or whatever you would like in your
writer’s notebook.
List your top five favorite movies of all time. What do these choices say about who
you are? Explain.
Activity 1:
Prepare a final draft of a character sketch for next week’s class.
Create a final draft of the character sketch of Thomas. A character sketch is a
description of a real person. Discuss Thomas’s inner and outer traits. In your mind,
and based on the book’s description, what does he physically look like. Based on his
actions in the book, what are the major qualities that Thomas possesses? What
motivates his action in the book? What major qualities does he possess? Pick 5 words
that best represent him and then through (5) vivid examples from the text, weave them
into your sketch. (This should be about two-three pages long. Whatever you don’t
know about him, make it up based on what you think he would do.)
Writing Fun
Imagine you’re a gas station attendant and are really bored at work. What do you do
to amuse yourself? Write an account of your tactics.
