PROCEDURES FOR DISCARDING OF TEXTBOOKS AND LIBRARY BOOKS
Follett is the District provider for the disposal of unwanted textbooks, library
books, teacher books, etc.
Sites should determine what type of material is to be discarded. The items
may be textbooks, library books, or a combination of both. Sites may elect to
have books either recycled or donated to charity.
The contact person at the school must contact Jeff Stephens, via email, at
jstephens@fes.follett.com, to schedule pick up of books or for further
information. Copy Viviane Hartz, viviane_hartz@dpsk12.org on all
correspondence to Jeff Stephens regarding pick up of discard books. Your email should specify contact person, location of books (room number) to be
picked up and number of boxes to be picked up. Pack boxes and label
“LIBRARY BOOKS FOR DISCARD” OR “TEXTBOOKS FOR DISCARD”.
Keep textbooks and library books separate. Boxes should not exceed 50 lbs
per box. Boxes to be picked up should be placed on first floor of the site in an
easily accessible area. Follett will respond to request for pick up within
seventy-two hours. Pick up times for books will depend on size of load and
will be scheduled at the convenience of the site. Truckload pick ups will
require at least 3 days notice. Allow extra time during the summer months
due to the volume of requests. If the number of boxes exceeds forty, they
require special scheduling of one week in advance. Jeff Stephens will
personally acknowledge all requests for pick up by e-mail.
Follett may be able to purchase your discarded textbooks. The site should
provide ISBN numbers for any series of textbooks if they wish to receive a
price quote for their books. The criteria for purchase is the condition of the
book and the copyright year of textbook. Follett will pay the site the used
book value for those textbooks, as determined by Follett’s buying guide.
Please note that there is a wide range of pricing on books. Generally the
more recent the copyright date, the greater the value for the book. Not all
books, however, will have value as this also depends on national demand.
Jeff will respond to price quote request by email within 24 hours.
Site may also request that books be picked up without receiving price quote in
advance. If so, Follett will assess books for potential value after they are
picked up and issue payment to the site within ten (10) days, if books have
value. If books do not have value because of age, condition, market status,
etc. then Follett will dispose of books by either donating them to charity or
having them recycled at the discretion of site.
In some cases, books may be held at Follett’s warehouse and reviewed daily
for possible purchase for a period up to three months. This would happen
because the market for books is very fluid and changes constantly. If Follett
is not able to purchase a title on a particular day because of national demand
but feel that the books may have future potential for purchase, Follett will
advise the site accordingly. The site would have the option of having Follett
“store and watch” the market for the books. If the books would “reappear” on
Follett’s buying guide, the site will receive a check for the used book value for
the books. This process can be very advantageous to the site as it allows for
more than one pass through the system for books.
Sites may elect to receive payment by check, PEP (Product Exchange
Program) points or a credit voucher which may be redeemed with Follett
Educational Services, Follett Library Book Co., or Follett Software Co.
If needed, boxes are available from Follett. Contact Jeff Stephens at
