Student Affairs Committee October 9, 2009 1 pm – 3 pm Aztlan B I. US Bank proposal for banking partnership – combines student ID card with ATM access and benefits to students and the student government. Two representatives from US Bank were present to deliver PowerPoint presentation. Their goal is to get MCC to partner with them with respect to the Student ID Card. They would encode a US Bank acct number on the magnetic strip and only when a student goes to a US Bank branch and opens an account would that account number become activated. There is no minimum balance nor any monthly fees associated with a US Bank checking acct. No student reps were at the meeting today. The faculty and staff felt that this is a dangerous idea and that there are very few benefits for the students. US Bank will offer marketing support, special promotions and financial support with respect to a signing bonus (based on student population) and annual royalty payments (based on student participation). It appears the college is the one who benefits the most, not necessarily the students. II. Work Group Reports a. Textbook Rental Program Todd Hannan (Follett) could not make the meeting but he forwarded an update on the rental services that Follett is currently offering – albeit at one campus only (Orange Coast College). He reports that it is working well and Follett is committed to making it work here at MCC. Julie Vignato did some searching on her own. With poll numbers from Teresa Cerda it appears that more than 80% of students say “yes” they do want some type of rental program for textbooks. SouthWestern College who has a “college run” bookstore started a rental program in 2006 with only 5 titles and today they have tripled their program and saved students over $1 million. b. EOPS Book Lending Program No update given on this program during this meeting. c. Student Input into Bookstore Profits No student representative was present for today’s meeting. III. Work Groups to Replace Committees: From our Committee we need to choose folks to be on the following committees: Commencement Fin. Aid appeals – Committee is set Matriculation Committee on Exceptions Awards and Scholarships Many of these committees need certain and specific types of faculty representation. Currently, the Student Affairs Committee does not have enough of the “specific” type of faculty to fill the needs of these committees. Ledet will ask the Steering Committee to see about adding more faculty members to our group. In the meantime committees that need more faculty were advised to just go ahead and ask different faculty who might not be assigned to a committee, and see if they would be willing to fill the need. If not, then we wait for Steering to assign more faculty.
