1. On the hurricane tracking map provided, plot the location of
Hurricane Sandy according to the following advisories:
Advisory 2
9:00pm Oct 22
12.5N 78.5W
Advisory 6
9:00pm Oct 23
14.3N 77.6W
Advisory 10

24.5N 75.6W
Advisory 18
9:00pm Oct 26
27.3N 77.1W
2. On the hurricane tracking map provided, locate Savannah.
What are the coordinates for Savannah?
_______________N ______________W
3. Using the following website:
http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames.shtml identify the first storm
name used in 2012. Then identify what the first name is that will
be used in 2013.
First storm in 2012 ______________________
First storm in 2013 ______________________
4. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration (NOAA), there were 19 named storms in 2011. Of
these, only 2 made landfall. Write the ratio of storms that made
landfall to total storms as a fraction, a decimal, and a percent.
Fraction ____________________
Decimal ____________________
Percent _____________________
5. After watching the news reports, you and your classmates
decided to collect supplies to send to the victims of Hurricane
Sandy. You collect 48 jars of baby food, 15 bags of dog food, and
96 bottles of water. What is the least number of boxes you will
need if you are going to put equal amounts of each item in the
boxes? How many jars, bags, and bottles will be in each box?
Number of boxes _____________________
Number of jars of baby food ____________
Number of bags of dog food ____________
Number of bottles of water _____________
6. A local restaurant has decided to help in the relief effort by
donating $1.50 for every $20 spent during the hours of 6:00pm and
9:00pm on Friday night. Write a proportion showing the amount
donated if total spent was $200.
_______________________
7. Based on the proportion above, how much will be donated?
_______________________
8. Complete the table to predict the total donation that would be
made for each amount of spending.
Donation
$1.50
Money
Spent
$10.00
$13.50
$50.00
$145.00
9. The economic impact of Hurricane Sandy is being felt worldwide due to the cancellation of flights to and from the northeast
United States. It is estimated that the airlines will lose
approximately $10 million dollars for every day that the flights are
cancelled. Let d represent the days that the flights are cancelled
and write an algebraic expression for the total losses the airlines
will suffer.
________________________________
10. Using the expression above, solve for the amount of losses if
the flights are cancelled for 3 days.
