A formidable combination of voices from the cream of
young European musicians - "fiercely intense" and
"beautifully intricate". Based in London and Berlin they’ve all
received critical acclaim (Mercury Music Award Nomination,
BBC Jazz Award) and they’ve all toured the world with
some of Europe’s finest musicians, but here they shine
collectively as like-minded experimentalists and
improvisers.

A rare opportunity to see one of our favourite pianists in
solo format. Noble’s new solo recording, reflects his
amazingly eclectic approach. A solo piano performance
that includes Joe Zawinul, Rodgers and Hammerstein,
Miles Davis’s jazz rock style, “My Fair Lady”, Elgar, lots of
music written for guitar and the imaginary banjo!! “a
supreme motivic improviser, in the manner of Monk, Rollins,
Ornette Coleman and Brad Mehldau”… The Guardian *****

Drawing on his experience as a member of Art Blakey’s
Jazz Messengers in the ’80s, Jean Toussaint’s project
commemorates The Messengers’ massive contribution to
modern jazz. An all-star line-up of musicians explores the
music of the legendary bandleader and some of the
amazing players who emerged from the Messenger ranks
over four decades.

Brilliant young vocalist/violinist nominated for Best Female
Vocalist in the 2015 Parliamentary Awards. Influences from
her early involvement with New Orleans soul, classical
training and improvised music. “A delightful, inquisitive
singer blessed with a crystal-clear tone ... fast making a
mark on the British contemporary jazz scene”
… Manchester Jazz Festival “a genuine original”…John
Fordham, The Guardian

Formed in 2007 as part of the Tomorrow’s Warriors scheme
The Daily Telegraph called them “the coolest of Britain’s
young jazz bands.” Now come of age, they’re one of the
UK’s most highly acclaimed jazz outfits - forward looking,
risk taking and creative music “Empirical's skill and
ingenuity keep on growing” - The Guardian
http://www.empiricalmusic.com /
A New York-based unit who've developed a near telepathic
relationship within the tradition of the standard jazz
repertoire. The Guardian’s glowing, four-star review of their
recent tour said: “a group devoted to radical reinvention of
famous songs ... this vivacious foursome delightedly
cherish the originals while brusquely deconstructing their
harmonies and tweaking their melodies... This is a
collective class act.”

Gale-force energy plus startlingly original material - dozens
of awards over six years, including 2014 Parliamentary
Jazz Awards Ensemble of the Year. Influences from
Ellington through Loose Tubes to Radiohead, vivid ideas
and brilliant mood changes – they’ve redefined the big band
for the 21st century. Back again after their brilliant sell-out

to pay tribute to the genius of Charles Mingus and his
music. Formed in 2011 for the Southbank Meltdown
Festival, the Sextet concentrates on Mingus’s musical
portraits of friends, lovers, political enemies, musicians and
one cat, with pieces from the classic ‘Ah Um’ at the core of
the repertoire. “Biscoe's sparkling arrangements and
splendid playing vividly capture Mingus's sprawling,
rumbustious energy, while giving the music a fresh
twist”….Kenny Mathieson, The Scotsman

in a duo for ten years, leading to incredibly responsive
interplay, augmented here by Julian Siegel’s beautifully
sensitive saxophone playing. The repertoire is based on
John Taylor’s arrangements of Paul McCartney songs,
together with his own compositions.

Liam Noble’s much-lauded “Brubeck” trio expands to a
dynamic five piece, with a fantastic musical palette ranging
between the avant-garde and Tin Pan Alley. Textural
contrasts, unusual forms, fragments and riffs transforming
into chorales, chord sequences dissolving into dense webs
of sound then morphing into lyrical melodies and danceable
grooves! And through all this, the spectre of the classic
hard bop quintet is never far away.

New York resident, Seamus Blake, a mainstay of
the current Mingus Big Band, has played with all the
big names from Brecker to Meldhau. His recent CD
was awarded 4.5 stars in Downbeat - “one of the
elite albums of the year”. Mark McKnight, still in his
20s, came 3rd in the Montreux International Jazz
Guitar Competition in 2008, and has been touring
Europe to great acclaim.

From his work with The Jazz Warriors in 1993
through his multiple prize winning debut album in ’99,
acclaimed Cheltenham Jazz Festival commission in
2003 and numerous subsequent awards, Denys
Baptiste has proved himself to be an outstanding

band provides the perfect setting for his melodic,
free-flowing compositions and fiery solo
improvisations.
Canadian-born Phelps distinguished himself as the

More respected in Europe than in his home country

Cologne College of music), John Taylor is one of the
greatest musicians the UK has produced. A towering
genius of the piano and a brilliant composer, he

fact his 2003 trio featured Marc Johnson – Bill
Evan’s last bass player). Among living pianists
perhaps the appropriate comparison is with Keith

Palle Danielsson (bass), and Martin France (drums).

Highly acclaimed as both guitarist and composer,
Phil Robson has won many awards, and fronted
many innovative projects. We're fortunate that with
this one he's bringing the remarkable New York
based saxist, Mark Turner. Internationally one of the
seriously acclaimed saxophone voices among the
recent generation, Turner's playing displays his
major influences - Coltrane and Warne Marsh – with
a technical brilliance that extends the saxophone
range effortlessly into the high altissimo register –
harmonically fluid and rhythmically beautiful
improvisation. The talents of Gareth Lockrane and
Michael Janisch are both well known to Sheffield
audiences but watch out for Ernesto Simpson, a
Cuban drummer with a strong reputation on the NY
jazz scene for his powerful, innovative style
Mick Hutton, one of the most talented bass players in
Europe, has been active on the British jazz scene for over
thirty years. It’s a joy to see him back in action on double
bass after a six-year period impaired by an injury. Effortless
bass lines, making the whole band sound great, combine
with superb solos and stylish arrangements. Four great
musicians with a very strong group identity, playing a mix of
Mick Hutton originals and Ellington and Mingus tunes, with
the accent on accessibility

A welcome return for the highly lyrical sax of Sam Crockatt,
one of the most in-demand young saxophonists in London.
He leads a truly improvising ensemble, which forms the ideal
context his own playing, reflecting his enthusiasm for Joe
Henderson.
"his love of an elegant melody is apparent throughout, his light but
strong, warbling, slightly smoky tenor sound perfectly gauged to br
out his tunes' freshness, grace and vitality"
Chris Parker - vortexjazz.co.uk
Marvellous South African pianist, Bheki Mseleku
(1955–2008) was lauded for his melodicism, rhythmic
sophistication, ability to assimilate a broad variety of
musical
styles and strong spiritual leanings. In his final
years he was a friend and inspiration to his touring
companion, John Donaldson.
Working in the San Francisco Bay area from 1982-93,
Donaldson played with many local notables. Since his return
from California he has toured with dozens of premier league British
musicians. On this occasion he is joined by Peter King on
alto as part of a very strong sextet.
"With remarkably little publicity or fuss, John Donaldson has
emerged as one of Britain’s most exciting contemporary jazz
pianists." Dave Gelly – The Observer
"One of the great piano players of recent British jazz"
Chris Parker - VortexJazz.co.uk
In 2001 Tim Garland formed a unique trio of virtuoso jazz
players, all band leaders in their own right but committed to
creating a three way dialogue of captivating, immersive
music.
The Storms/Nocturnes trio features New York vibes star Joe
Locke and recent Grammy nominee Geoffrey Keezer, the
peerless piano phenomenon now living in California, along
with the UK's Garland on saxes and bass clarinet. After a
gap of several years running their respective bands they are
re-united and are currently recording their new album which
will be released in Spring 2011.
A modern twist to the classic jazz quartet, blurring the
boundaries between accessible tune-led music, heavy
grooves and improvising of the highest order. Tight group
interplay and a strong sense of song-like compositions show a dee
respect for folk, world music and funk. Waldmann delivers
with a captivating warm tone on both soprano and tenor
saxes, full of sophisticated rhythmic undercurrents
and thematic narratives.

Arnie Somogyi has brought some great jazz to the British
scene, with a wide variety of bands. He calls this “A
repertoire, rather than a tribute band”. The talents of some
of the UK's leading jazz musicians combine to draw from
the music of the great jazz composer and bassist, Charles
Mingus. The band embodies the freedom of interpretation
and drive that characterise the music of one of the most
important and colourful figures in jazz. Lesser known
Mingus tunes feature alongside familiar favourites.
Initially wary of taking on Mingus' music, Arnie eventually bit
the bullet as a special fundraiser for Sheffield Jazz. The
musicians and audience enjoyed it so much that he decided
to extend the band beyond a one-off gig.

Stan Tracey is an outstanding figure in the jazz world.
His career, spanning five decades, has had a huge
influence on both his peers and successive
generations. As the house pianist at Ronnie Scott’s
in the 1960’s he played with all the visiting American jazz
greats – Sonny Rollins said “Does anybody here know how
good he really is?” His capricious piano playing combines
the percussive melody of Monk with the robust lyricism of
Ellington resulting in a brilliantly idiosyncratic style. For
tonight’s concert, a fantastic octet comprising the cream of
British jazz talent perform two of Stan’s commissioned
suites: The Hong Kong Suite was commissioned by
Governor Lord Pattern to mark the British handover back to
China in 1997 and the Amandla Suite in 1993 by the Trade
Unions that merged to become UNISON - “Amandla” is a
Zulu word that became associated with the anti-apartheid
struggle. This latest Octet line-up have just released a new
double CD recording of the two suites, titled “Later Works”
to rave critical reviews.
Etheridge would have achieved lifelong fame for his 70s
work with Soft Machine and others, but he went on to
spend 5 years touring the world with, Stephane Grappelli.
Christian Garrick joins him to pay tribute to that experience.
"... the Etheridge-Garrick partnership is one of the most
