The winners of the 2011 IDEC Student Design Competition were announced Saturday, March 19 during the
Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC) Annual Conference in Denver, Colorado. IDEC partnered with the
National Council of Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ) to present monetary awards to the winning students.
The winning entry “Kami: Center for Youth Wellness” was submitted by Tristan Reiber, Isabel Quintana and
Marcela Laverde of the University of Florida. They worked under faculty sponsors Candy Carmel-Gilfilen and
Carah Cain.
The second place winning entry was titled, “The AHIRI Center.” It was produced by Jennifer Giddens and
Melissa Lundberg of Utah State University under the guidance of Darrin Brooks and Steven Mansfield .
The judges selected as the third place winner an entry titled “Community Care Clinic of Newark” by Ida Torres,
Tristan Pashalian, and Peter Khalil of the New Jersey Institute of Technology. These students were sponsored by faculty member David Brothers.
All student teams were given identical specifications for their design of a health center but were encouraged to research the demographics and healthcare trends of their community. Entries were judged on eight categories including space planning, sustainable decision making, and quality of research.
