Summary of the broad purpose of the position and its responsibilities/duties The Staff Gastroenterologist/Senior Medical Practitioner is responsible for the delivery of Gastroenterology services to patients allocated by the Lyell McEwin Health Service in collaboration with the responsible General Physician, Registrars, Interns, Fellow Consultants, Nurses and Allied Health Professionals. The Staff Gastroenterologist/Senior Medical Practitioner is required to participate in Quality Assurance activities of the Division of Medicine LMH 2. Reporting/Working Relationships (To whom the person reports, staff for whom the person is responsible and other significant connections and working relationships within the organisation Responsible to the Clinical Head, Gastroenterology Services - Lyell McEwin Health Service 3. Special Conditions (Such as non-metropolitan location, travel requirements, frequent overtime etc.) Minimum six sessions per week in the Gastroenterology Department LMH and four sessions at the Royal Adelaide Hospital Gastroenterology Department managing referred Gastroenterology outpatients and inpatients. Gastroenterology consultations to inpatients in other areas of the Lyell McEwin may be required especially if the patient is unable to be transferred to the Gastroenterology Department Participation in an ‘on call’ roster arranged with other Gastroenterologists of the LMH. Teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate Medical Officers as directed by the Clinical Head of Gastroenterology Opportunity for Research as directed by the Clinical Head of Gastroenterology Rights of Private Practice may be negotiated A performance appraisal will be conducted annually LMH is a smoke free environment 4. Statement of Key Responsibilities/Duties (group into major areas of responsibility/ activity and list in descending order of importance) 4.1 Assist in the provision of a Gastroenterology services by: Developing and implementing protocols in Gastroenterology with other staff as appropriate; Undertaking ‘on call’ duties and responsibilities where necessary including out of hours public holidays and weekend duties Undertaking clinical sessions in Gastroenterology as directed by the Clinical Head of Gastroenterology LMH. 4.2 Ensuring a high standard of clinical practice in Gastroenterology for all medical staff in the Division of Medicine LMH by initiating and performing the following as directed by the Head, Division of Medicine: assist in the provision of an in-service education program; maintain and improve personal knowledge and skills in Gastroenterology; contribute to the activities of professional associations where appropriate; participate in activities which review and evaluate the care in Gastroenterology being given to patients at the LMH and the effectiveness of that care; 4.3 Assist in the efficient administration of Gastroenterology in the Division of Medicine LMH by: assisting in the supervision, discipline, attendance, training, safety, efficiency and performance of junior medical staff at LMH in Gastroenterology. 4.4 Contribute to the ongoing commitment to policies and procedures of the North Western Adelaide Health Service by: complying with Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare principles and procedures at the LMH; participating in Quality Improvement activities of the LMH, including the identification of performance standards and increased efficiencies; complying with Equal Employment Opportunity principles and procedures on a daily basis; participating in Performance Enhancement activities, including annual performance appraisals; ensuring the ongoing training and development of all staff supervised; understanding and complying with the LMH Delegations of Authority. PERSON SPECIFICATION Essential minimum requirements (those characteristics considered absolutely necessary) 1. Education/Vocational Qualifications etc. 2. Personal Abilities/Aptitudes/Skills (related to the job description and expressed in a way which allows objective assessment) 3. Clinical skills appropriate for duties in Gastroenterology within the Division of Medicine; Ability to supervise staff; Ability to relate well to other medical practitioners, health professionals, patients and the public; The ability to organise education programs for medical officers, trainee medical officers and undergraduate medical students; Credentialled in the performance of gastroscopies, colonoscopies and the insertion of percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomies (PEG), ERCP Competent with the performance of liver biopsies Commitment to continuing education Experience (including community experience) 4. FRACP in Gastroenterology or an equivalent specialist medical qualification. Registrable with the SA Medical Board.
