PlantNetwork Conference Urban Public Gardens: challenges and opportunities Thursday 11 & Friday 12 April 2013 Clare College Cambridge & Cambridge University Botanic Garden Many of our botanic and historic gardens are in urban settings going through a period of rapid change. Cambridge University Botanic Garden is a prime example, with major housing and office developments close to its boundaries. Increases in local population density, changing communities and flats without gardens present new challenges and demands, but they also offer opportunities that we seek to embrace. Public gardens in cities can be oases of highquality green space; special places for relaxation, and formal and informal education; and, most importantly, places for people of all ages to interact with the environment. Speakers from a range of urban gardens, parks and organisations will consider some of the many challenges and opportunities, focusing on public gardens and spaces, rather than domestic gardens: Role of horticulture in creating dynamic urban landscapes Habitats, climate and wildlife in cities Public engagement and exciting an interest in plants Cultural and social roles Health and well-being. Please see overleaf for speakers and talks; details will be posted on the PlantNetwork website as the final few speakers are confirmed. The first day will be held at Clare College, the second oldest college in Cambridge, situated on either side of the River Cam. The second day will be at Cambridge University Botanic Garden, with talks in the Sainsbury Laboratory, winner of the RIBA Stirling Prize 2012. See overleaf for outline timetable. Tim Upson and his staff at the Botanic Garden look forward to welcoming you to the conference and showing you the Garden. All are welcome.
