Before you begin
Description
Fire Extinguishers cylinders
Category
Unused Fire Extinguishers are not a waste.
 Any quantity of Fire Extinguisher agent remaining in the cylinder can be
used and should be returned to the vendor as unused product.
Analysis


No laboratory analysis required
Identification by ingredients on label and MSDS
Accumulation


Use cylinder until empty.
If cylinder is unusable [damaged], empty or punctured and has the valve
removed: It may be placed in scrap metal bin.
Waste
Reduction


Use all of contents
Return empty cylinder or any unused portion of a cylinder to vendor.
Disposal


Return re-usable cylinder to vendor for refill.
If cylinder is empty or punctured and has the valve removed: It may be
placed in scrap metal bin.
Recordkeeping
If non-hazardous (Cylinder punctured or valve removed):
 List on General Cargo Manifest as scrap metal
If returning cylinder to vendor for refill:
 Complete entry as “Fire Extinguishers” in Hazardous Materials Section of
the Fieldwood Energy Shipping Manifest, prior to transportation.
 Maintain a copy of manifest offshore and at shore base facilities while
shipping papers are active. Send original manifest with shipment.
 Since Fire Extinguishers are not a waste, there is no need to maintain file.

Package Fire Extinguishers as follows:

Ship Fire Extinguisher cylinders secured in a standing position only.
b.
Secure cylinder valve cap when applicable.
c.
The following are approved cylinders. For cylinders not marked with a service
pressure, the service pressure is designated by DOT as follows:
Call or FAX Dock/Base to schedule shipment.
Contact owner/vendor to schedule pick up of material.

a.
“Fire Extinguishers, 2.2, UN 1013”

Stencil Container -“Fieldwood Energy” and the generator’s location (i.e. Eugene
Island 158)
Label Package:
a.
Fire Extinguishers charged to less than 241 psig at 70°F are exempt from DOT
label requirements (except when transported by air) if they are packaged.
b.
Otherwise: "Non-Flammable Gas" label near the marking in 3.a. (above).
Prepare shipping papers:
a.
Complete entry in Hazardous Materials Section [Section I] of the Fieldwood
Energy Shipping Manifest (See example).
Placard Vehicle/Vessel:
a.
For cargoes of more than 1000 pounds: "Non-Flammable Gas" Placard with UN
number 1013 and the number "2" in the lower corner.
b.
For cargoes of 1000 pounds or less: No Placard required on transport vehicle.

See attached placard
