Addendum: Breeding Program for the Syracuse University Live Animal Protocol
Form
(IACUC: Approved 11/24/03)
This form is to be completed and attached to a Live Animal Protocol for any use of
breeding at Syracuse University. The purpose is to provide the IACUC and LAR an
estimated accounting of all animals used in and produced from a breeding program.
Provide estimates of numbers for each strain that you plan to breed.
ESTIMATED AVERAGE NUMBER OF ANIMALS/YEAR:
[i.e., 2 x (# of breeding pairs/year) plus Young = (# breeding pairs/year) x (total #
litters/pair) x (#young/litter)]
For example: 2 x 2 breeding pairs + (2 breeding pairs/year x 6 litters/pair x 10 pups/litter)
= 124 animals/year.
TOTAL ESTIMATED AVERAGE NUMBER OF ANIMALS:
[i.e., (# per year) x (# years in protocol)] For example: There are 3 years in this protocol,
therefore a total of 3 x 124 = 372 animals is expected to be produced.
NUMBER OF ANIMALS/YEAR EXPECTED TO BE USED FOR BREEDING :
(i.e., # animals/year from breeding used to replace breeding animals)
For example: 4 animals/year used to replace two breeding pairs.
TOTAL NUMBER OF ANIMALS EXPECTED TO BE USED FOR BREEDING [i.e.,
(# animals/year from breeding used to replace breeding animals) x (number of years for
protocol)]
For example: 4 animals/year used to replace two breeding pairs x 3 years = 12 total
animals expected to be used for breeding.
1
NUMBER OF ANIMALS/YEAR EXPECTED TO BE USED IN EXPERIMENTAL
PROTOCOLS (Provide each protocol number. Note: these numbers should correspond
with yearly numbers listed in experimental protocols or amendments.): For example: 30
animals/year are expected to be used as part of protocol 03-001. 10 animals/year are
expected to be used as part of protocol 03-002. Total = 40 animals/year.
TOTAL NUMBER OF ANIMALS TO BE USED IN EXPERIMENTAL PROTOCOLS:
(Provide each protocol number. Note: these numbers should correspond with total
numbers listed in experimental protocols or amendments.): [i.e., (# years in experimental
protocols) x (# animals to be used in experiments)] For example: 3 years x 30
animals/year = 90 animals for protocol 03-001. 1 year x 10 animals/year = 10 animals for
protocol 03-002. Total = 100 animals.
EXPECTED NUMBER OF SURPLUS ANIMALS/YEAR IN BREEDING
PROTOCOL: {i.e., [#animals produced/year - (# animals/year to be used in experimental
protocols + # animals/year to be used to replace breeding pairs)]} For example: 124 (40+4) = 80.
TOTAL EXPECTED NUMBER OF SURPLUS ANIMALS IN BREEDING
PROTOCOL: {i.e., (#animals produced/year)x(# years) - [( # animals/year to be used in
experimental protocols)x(# years) + (# animals/year to be used to replace breeding
pairs)x(# years)]} For example: 372 - (100 +12) = 260.
2
EXPLANATION FOR NUMBER OF SURPLUS ANIMALS:
For example: Gerbils used in studies of the auditory system must be younger than 6
months of age, due to changes in the auditory pathway. Therefore, two breeding
pairs/year are typically used to provide young animals over the course of the year. When
possible, delays will be introduced between the initiation of breeding pairs to reduce the
total number of animals produced per year.
DESCRIBE EUTHANASIA METHOD OF SURPLUS ANIMALS AND BREEDERS:
(Unless otherwise justified below, this must be AVMA approved): For example: Surplus
animals and breeders will be euthanized by LAR staff using CO2.
