Identification of modern design in architecture and furniture is stressed. 5.0 Prerequisites: None 5.0 General Course Competencies: 1. Identify architecture, furniture design, decorative arts and major influences of the eighteenth and nineteenth century European styles. 2. Identify style characteristics of the eighteenth through twentieth century American designs and their major European and Asian influences. 3. Apply an understanding of historical design to contemporary interior design incorporating coordination of color, fabric, furniture and interior detail. 4. Identify the leading modern designers and their contributions to architecture and/or interior design. 5. Compile a reference file of terminology, descriptions, pictures and swatches for each historical period studied. 6. Build a design vocabulary necessary for a knowledgeable and professional interior designer. 7.0 Major Units of Instruction: I. II. III. Identify the approximate dates of the rococo period in each country. 2. Define or describe important architectural features, furniture, design motifs, textiles, colors, decorative accessories and decorative techniques of rococo period. 3. Identify characteristics unique to each of the following styles: Louis XV – France Queen Anne and Georgian - England Colonial, Georgian – America 4. Identify the major influences on design; i.e. political, economic, cultural events, important people such as architects, artists, craftsmen, monarchs. 5. Find photographic examples of each style’s influence on contemporary design. 18th Century; Neoclassical – French, English, American Unit II 1. Identify the approximate dates of the neoclassical period in each country. 2. Describe or define important architectural features, furniture decorative motifs, textiles, colors, decorative accessories, decorative techniques of the neoclassical period. 3. Identify characteristics unique to each of the following styles: Louis XVI, Provincial, Empire - France Georgian, Regency – England Federal, Empire, Vernacular – American 4. Identify the major influences on design; i.e. political, economic, cultural events, important people such as architects, artists, craftsmen, furniture makers. 5. Find photographic examples of each style’s influence on contemporary design. Unit III 19th Century 1. Define or describe important architectural features, furniture, design motifs, textiles, colors, decorative accessories and decorative techniques of each of the following styles: Biedermeier Arts & Crafts Shaker Art Nouveau Victorian 2. Identify the major influences on design; i.e. political, economic, cultural events, important people such as architects, artists, craftsmen, furniture makers, interior designers. 3. Find photographic examples of each style’s influence on contemporary design. Unit IV 20th Century 1. Define or describe important architectural features, furniture, design motifs, textiles, colors, decorative accessories and decorative techniques of each of the following styles: Prairie Asian International Scandanavian Art Deco Modern Post modern 2.
