Chapter Inquiry: How did military events and their consequences contribute
to the
foundations of Canada?
Your task it to help your classmates understand the chapter inquiry. To do so you
must develop a poster that informs them about the inquiry question. In groups you
will learn about some key events and develop a poster to answer one of the
following focus questions or topics below:
1. Why were France and England drawn into conflict? (p.101-104)
2. Why did the English expel the
Acadians from their land in Nova
Scotia? Include the case study on
Acadians. (p. 106-109)
3. How was the Battle on the Plains of
Abraham a turning point in
Canadian history? (p. 110-113)
4. What role did the first nations play
in the war between France and
England? (p. 114-115)
5. What happened as a result of the
war? What was the Treaty of Paris
and how did it affect those people involved? (p. 116-117)
6. What were the Royal Proclamation and the Quebec Act? How have they shaped
present day Canada? (p.118-120)
7. What is the difference between a “fact” and an “opinion”? How does “bias”
affect our interpretation of events? Use examples in your explanation.(p. 100)
Procedure:
1. We will read pages 98 – 99 together for background
information.
2. In your group, read the section of the textbook that
applies to your question.
3. Discuss the information as a group and take notes.
4. Using this information and other resources (if necessary),
develop a poster that includes text, maps and/or images
to help your classmates understand the topic (see
criteria below)
5. Use the computer to make a handout/worksheet for your
classmates to complete as they study your poster. Give a
copy of this handout to your teacher for photocopying.

Poster criteria & checklist:
Your poster must include these things. Write each group member’s name next to the
part that he/she is responsible for:
Poster Section
Title: large, clear, neat. Relates to
topic.
Write-up: key points of your section
(point form summary)
Write-up: your group’s question and the
answer.
Visuals: include at least 3 that relate
directly to your section/topic.
Key vocabulary: include 4-5 important
words/concepts for your section. Include
their definitions and why they are
important.
Class hand-out: for your peers to
complete. Some suggestions: fill-in-theblank, true/false, crossword, matching

1. Research process – individual mark based on teacher observation (Outcome 3)
2. Poster Presentation – group mark (Outcome 4)
3. Unit test – individual mark (Outcome 1)
4. Peer evaluation – you will evaluate each of your group members for their effort
and contribution to the project
