Retro “Full Depth” CASTinTACT™ Installation Procedures
A. Since temperature affect the setting time and rate of strength of concrete, standard ACI procedures for
storing, mixing, and placing concrete in hot or cold weather are recommended. See ACI 305 "Standards on
Hot Weather Concreting; or ACI 306 "Standard on Cold Weather Concreting."
B. Consult contract documents on areas to receive CASTinTACT tactile warning panels. Front edge of panels
should be 6-8” back from curb line. Lay out panels and determine measurements prior to cutting. Oversize
area 1”
each direction. If multiple ramps are to be retrofitted build a template.
C. Saw cut existing concrete full depth using a diamond blade. Contain slurry and dispose of properly. Partial
depth and breakout will not be allowed. Do not chip concrete on perimeter of cut out. Perimeter chips and
over cuts must be filled and patched with a gray epoxy gel adhesive approved by tactile manufacturer.
D. Control joints must be in curb ramp design. If non-existent, install during perimeter saw cut out for panels.
Fill control joint with flexible polyurethane joint sealant. Consult specifications for more information.
E. Thickness of concrete under panels shall be increased 1” in depth. Prepare a well drained and properly
compacted subgrade. Leave no puddling, standing water, ice, frost, or mud. Consult contract documents for
more information on subgrade, compaction, and reinforcing details.
F. The concrete specified shall conform to contract documents with a maximum slump of 4". Concrete shall
be poured, floated and recessed below finish grade to the proper grade and slope.
G. Concrete shall be finished with a wood float finished to leave an open surface.
H. Pre-dampen back of CASTinTACT panels with potable water. Apply 1/8” thickness of CASTinTACT PreMix
(3:1 ratio of powder to potable water) or (2:1:1 ratio of portland cement, clean masons sand and potable
water). Work into keyed surface on back of panel with rubber float for 100% surface coverage.
I. Install tactile warning panels immediately in fresh concrete and lightly tap panels to grade using a rubber
mallet to insure bond and 100% surface contact. Square edges of panels butted tightly together. Base of
truncated dome should be flush with adjacent surfaces to permit proper drainage and eliminate tripping hazard
between surfaces. Tolerances between tactile panels and surrounding surfaces is 1/16" maximum.
Immediately after placement re-check slope and elevation for proper grade.
J. In environments subject to freeze thaw conditions, leave a ½” grout joint between panels.
K. After initial set of fresh concrete, grout panel joints with 1:3 ratio of Portland cement and 30 mesh clean
sand with 1:1 ratio of acrylic admix and potable water and color pigment to match CASTinTACT panel. Force
grout into joints. After initial set, finish joints by tooling to product a slightly concaved polished joint.
L. Immediately clean off any grout smears off panels and adjacent surfaces with a damp hydra sponge to
ensure a clean appearance.
Cleaning
A. Remove all unused material, broken out concrete, debris, tools, and equipment. Dispose of properly.
B. If the tactile warning surface requires, clean the tiles in accordance with CASTinTACT Maintenance and
Cleaning Guide.
Protection
Protect the CASTinTACT panel’s surfaces from traffic until desired strength is achieved. Protect using coverings if required until
acceptance of work by the customer.

edge of panels should be 6-8” back from curb line. Lay out panels and determine measurements prior to
cutting. Oversize area 1” each direction. If multiple ramps are to be retrofitted build a template.
C. Excavated concrete area should be approximately 1-1/2” in depth.
D. Saw cut perimeter of retrofit installation partial depth using a diamond blade. Excavate existing concrete
from inside perimeter by spacing additional partial depth saw cuts 1” apart and chip out area with a light roto
hammer. Do not fracture sub base of concrete to receive to tactile panels. Do not chip concrete on perimeter
of cut out. Perimeter chips and over cuts must be filled and patched with a gray epoxy gel adhesive approved
by tactile manufacturer.
E. Control joints must be in curb ramp design. If non-existent, install during perimeter saw cut out for panels.
Fill control joint with flexible polyurethane joint sealant. Consult specifications for more information.
F. Area to receive tactile panels should be structurally sound, clean and free of loose concrete, dust, oil,
grease, laitance, or other surface contaminants. Pre-treat all cracks in sub base with epoxy adhesive
approved by the manufacturers. Let initial cure.
G. Saturate surface with clean water. Substrate should be saturated surface dry (SSD) with no standing
water.
H. The repair mortar shall be approved by tactile panel manufacturer. The repair mortar shall be poured,
wood floated and recessed below finish grade to the proper grade and slope. Follow repair mortar’s mixing
and application procedures.

mortar and lightly tap panels to grade using a rubber mallet to insure bond and 100% surface contact. Square
