1. Summary Statement: State the major function(s) of the position and its role in the
university. Attach an organizational chart with positions, ranges, and names for the division
which reflects the position in it as well as those supervised in the department. (This section is

The Coordinator, Surgical Skills Laboratory coordinates the educational experiences of residents,
fellows and medical students within the surgical skills lab. This position supports the Accreditation
Council on Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) required surgical skills portions for residents of
surgical specialties including, general surgery, integrated plastic surgery, otolaryngology, and
orthopedics, and for surgical critical fellows. Additionally, the Coordinator supports undergraduate
medical student experiences within the laboratory during their surgery clerkship and selected
electives. The position is responsible for the development and maintenance of the surgical skills
curriculum for all groups of learners, including non-ACGME surgical fellowships that are offered by
UNSOM. The incumbent provides support and/or instruction for other educational activities, both
internal and external, such as instruction of faculty continuing medical education credits for the
department of surgery. The position reports to the Associate Dean, Graduate Medical Education with
input from the Associate Dean, Academic Affairs and the Director, Surgical Simulation.
2. List the major responsibilities, including percentage of time devoted to each. Provide

70% - Graduate Medical Education
 Provide hands-on supervision as the teaching assistant during all ACGME required resident
and/or fellow laboratory sessions to include preparation of the equipment and development of
the teaching assignment
 Collaborate with the Directors of Surgical Simulation and Resident/Fellow Programs to:
develop curricular modules, organize curriculum and determine sequence of curricular models,
develop quizzes and tests for the skills lab sessions, track skills accomplishments and
milestones, develop remediation plans, and develop quality improvement curriculum
 Support weekly educational conferences for residents, fellows and faculty such as Morbidity
and Mortality, Surgical Council on Resident Education (SCORE) curriculum, grand rounds,
journal club, fellows’ conferences, etc. for all surgery residency and fellowship programs;
provide related IT/AV and speaker support at such events
 Organize and certify completion of the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) course
for surgery residents as this is a requirement for graduating residents to become board
certified (American Board of Surgery)
 Provide hands-on supervision and surgical skills education for non-accredited UNSOM
surgical fellowships in minimally invasive surgery, colorectal surgery and micro-vascular hand
 Provide and support FLS course for OB/GYN senior residents
 Manage the skills laboratory by scheduling learners, ordering and maintaining supplies,
equipment procurement, setting up equipment for learners, monitoring and maintaining
equipment and software, and planning for lab needs.
 Write grants for funds to support GME training activities in the laboratory
 Work with residents and/or fellows to implement research projects within the skills laboratory
 Participate in activities relevant to skills coordinator and graduate medical education
 Participate in weekly GME staff meetings
 Collaborate with the Director, Surgical Simulation, to participate in multi-institutional studies
involving all levels of learners

20% - Undergraduate Medical Education
 Collaborate with the Directors of Surgical Skills and Surgery Clerkship to develop and
implement curriculum for third year medical students during their surgery clerkship
 Collaborate with the Directors of Surgical Skills and Surgery Electives to develop and
implement curriculum for fourth year medical students participating in elective rotations offered
by the department of surgery
 Collaborate with the Director, Surgery Electives to develop and implement a surgical skills
boot-camp for fourth year medical students pursuing careers in surgical specialties
 Manage the skills laboratory including daily activities, procurement of funds, grant writing, and
equipment management
 Bring forth and plan for innovations developed by the Association of Surgical Education (ASE)
and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) for new
curricula targeted for third and fourth year students
 Participate in student and institutional affairs activities as needed for recruitment, pipeline
projects and other events as requested
 Work with and supervise medical students’ research projects in the skills laboratory
10% - Continuing Medical Education (CME)
 Collaborate with the Director, CME to develop and implement FLS courses for practicing
physicians at UNSOM and in the community
 Coordinate CME portions of the surgical education program for faculty with adherence to the
ACCME requirements
 Collaborate with the Director, CME and Director, Skills Laboratory to design and implement
hands-on skills sessions for community physicians
 Collaborate with the Directors of Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), CME and the
Division of Acute Care Surgery to implement the ATLS course, including instructors course
 Collaborate with Directors of Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET), CME
and the Division of Acute Care Surgery to implement the ASSET course
 Collaborate with the Director, Surgical Simulation to implement other surgical courses as they
are developed by surgery professional organizations
 Develop a business plan to support FLS, ATLS, ASSET and other standardized courses
3. Describe the level of freedom to take action and make decisions with or without
supervision and how the results of the work performed impact the department, division and/or
the university as a whole.
Level of Freedom:
The Coordinator works in collaboration with a variety of individuals – skills lab director, director of
CME, director of recruitment and student affairs, associate dean for academic affairs, program
directors and clerkship directors – to design and implement curricular programs. Once programs are
developed, the incumbent is expected to implement and execute the surgical skills portions of
programs independently and according to accreditation requirements. There is a significant level of
autonomy to develop and implement the programs and activities described above. Issues involving
accreditation or resident/fellow/student remediation should be brought to the attention of the
supervisor and appropriate Associate Dean, Director and Coordinator.
Impact:
This position is critical to the accreditation of four ACGME approved residency programs and the
accreditation of the institution to provide GME. Further, the work of this position impacts the
accreditation of UNSOM, specifically for the medical students in their surgery clerkship. Medical
student recruitment and pipeline programs as well as CME programs for physicians in practice are
also imperative to the current and future success of UNSOM. Without this position, these
activities/programs could not be offered.
