RICHLAND COUNTY LANDMARK CRITERIA
1. Any property included in the categories below is considered a Richland County Landmark:
 Listed on the National Register of Historic Places
 Determined eligible for the National Register
 Listed in the Richland County Bicentennial Committee Historic Homes and Buildings Landmark
Program
 City of Columbia Historic Landmark
2. All other properties must demonstrate:
A. Association with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of our
history; or
B. Association with the lives of significant persons in our past; or
C. Embodiment of distinctive characteristics of a type, period, or method of construction; or
representation of the work of a master; or possession of high artistic values; or
D. Likelihood of yielding information important in prehistory or history
3. In the case of a cemetery, landmark status will be conferred if it derives its primary significance either
from the graves of persons of transcendent importance or from association with historic events. A
religious property will qualify if it derives its primary significance from architectural or artistic distinction
or historical importance.
4. All properties must be a minimum of 50 year old and have maintained their structural integrity. For
buildings constructed after 1960, special circumstances must be proven in order for the property to be
considered. Special considerations would include:
A. Designed and/or constructed by a noted architect or designer; or
B. Represents a style or period of architecture that is unique to this area; or
C. Possesses high artistic value

If the answer to any of the above is ‘yes,’ your property is considered a Richland County
Landmark and you are eligible to apply for a historic preservation grant.
If none of the above applies to your property, please provide the following information:

PROPERTY SIGNIFICANCE
Explain the historical value of the property.
Properties should 1) demonstrate an association with significant events or people in the history
of the community, state or nation; or 2) embody a distinctive style of architecture or method of
construction; represent the work of a master; or possess high artistic values; or 3) be likely to
yield important information in prehistory or history.
Provide copies of pertinent information about the property.
PHOTOGRAPHS
Submit at least four (4) photographs of the exterior front, side, and rear, outbuildings,
surrounding land, and any significant exterior or interior details. Photos should be on a CD or
emailed to stonecollumn@rcgov.us
