Childhood Immunisations
We operate a Nurse led weekly child immunisation clinic on Thursdays, the Health Authority will contact
you when your child is due any vaccinations and offer you an appointment.
As a parent, you may not like seeing your baby or child being given an injection. However, vaccination is
an important step in protecting your child against a range of serious and potentially fatal diseases.
Vaccinations are quick, safe and extremely effective. Once your child has been vaccinated against a
disease, their body can fight that disease more effectively if they come into contact with it. If a child isn’t
vaccinated, they will be at increased risk of catching the illness.
There will always be some children who are unavoidably unprotected because:

they can’t be vaccinated for medical reasons
they’re too young to be vaccinated
they can’t get to the vaccine services
for a few, the vaccine doesn’t work
But if more parents have their children vaccinated, then more children in the community will be protected
against catching an illness. This lowers the chance of an outbreak of the disease.
The only time that it’s safe to stop vaccinating children against an illness is when the disease has been
wiped out worldwide.
For example, when every country had eliminated smallpox in 1979, vaccination against the disease was
stopped. It’s hoped that polio will soon be eradicated, and that measles may follow.

Smoking Cessation
A smoking cessation clinic is provided by the Quit 4 Life team, this is a free, drop in clinic held on
Mondays at Petersfield Community Hospital 6.00-7.30pm and on Wednesdays at Winton House Centre,
18 High Street 9.30-10.30am.

Ear Syringing
Ear Wax is a natural secretion which helps to protect your ears and keep them clean, but if your ears are
blocked with wax, this can cause you problems.
These problems can be made worse by using items such as cotton buds to remove the wax. We
recommend that if you are suffering from blocked ears, you first should use olive oil to soften the wax for
a minimum of 3 weeks. This may be enough to resolve your ear problems as the softened wax moves out
of the ear on its own. However, we do offer ear syringing if necessary.
Ear syringing should only be considered after 3 weeks of oiling, and as a last resort. This is because ear
syringing can damage your ears especially if you have not oiled enough. Other problems that may occur
after syringing include: pain, ear infection, deafness, dizziness, ringing in the ears and perforated ear
drum.
Ear syringing may not be advisable if you have a perforated ear drum, recent ear ache, ear infection in
the last six weeks, previous ear surgery, cleft palate, grommets in the last eighteen months or have had
problems with ear syringing in the past.

Healthzone
Healthzone is a drop-in centre for young people aged 12-18 years. It is a free, confidential service and is
based at the Grange Surgery (opposite Tesco) in Petersfield. It is manned by two practice nurses from
the Swan Surgery and the Grange Surgery together with a GP from the Grange Surgery.
The Healthzone runs every Wednesday 2.00 – 4.30pm during term time and no appointment is
necessary. Young people can bring a friend or attend alone. Services include contraception, emergency
contraception, general health advice, puberty issues, school issues, acne, smoking and alcohol. It is the
place to go to if in need of advice regarding relationships or health or if you just need someone to talk to.
Young people can make an appointment at the Swan Surgery to see a doctor or nurse without explaining
why to reception staff.
Free emergency contraception for those under 21 is available from the Family Planning Clinic at
Petersfield Hospital and Boots Chemists.

Family Planning, Coils, Implants and Cervical Smears
The practice nurses are able to issue patients with repeat prescriptions for the contraceptive pill, provide
pre-conceptual advice and carry out cervical smears.
Emergency contraception can be assessed via a GP or practice nurse in emergency appointments.
Contraceptive coils (intra-uterine devices) are fitted by Drs Buckley, Bush, Jacklin, Mitford & Laly. They
require a special appointment, which you will need to arrange with the receptionists. It is important that
you discuss whether a coil is appropriate for you with your GP before making this appointment.

Chaperones
There are occasions when patients need to be assessed by a GP or Nurse which might involve intimate
examinations.
Swan Surgery are committed to putting patients at ease whenever possible, and if you wish a chaperone
to be present during your examination please do not hesitate to ask.
There may be occasions when it will not be possible for such a chaperone to be provided immediately, in
which case you might have to return for the examination to be carried out at a mutually convenient time.
Trust is important in the relationship between clinician and patient and we would, at all times, wish you to
feel able to ask for a chaperone, should you require it.

