TYMPANOSTOMY-VENTILATION TUBE PLACEMENT

An incision is made in one or both ear drums after cleaning the ear canal. A tube, usually plastic or metal is placed into this incision so that communication exists between the middle ear and the ear canal. This is done as an out patient surgical procedure.

INDICATIONS

Middle ear fluid is persistent

Recurrent middle ear infections

To relieve ear pressure

PRE-OPERATIVE (before surgery)

The day before surgery, nothing by mouth after midnight (food or drink, this includes water).

The patient must be accompanied by a responsible adult who can provide transportation to and from the hospital, unless told otherwise.

POST-OPERATIVE (after surgery)

There may be some ear discomfort. Regular Tylenol may be taken if needed for a day or two if necessary.

A slight drainage may be noticed for the first few days. If it occurs more than a few days after the surgery please call our office. Antibiotic drops may be required.

Try to keep the inside of the ear dry as long as the tube is in place. As long as one is upright while showering, bathing and even surface swimming the ear is typically safe.

However, if lake or ocean swimming, swim plugs are advised.
