ESSEL PROPACK MANUFACTURING EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIP
The Essel Propack Manufacturing Excellence Scholarship Program recognizes Danville area high school seniors for their
community service, academic performance and leadership skills.

Essel Propack will award four scholarships of up to $5,000 each to Danville area high school seniors who meet
the eligibility requirements.

SONY KINGOFF MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
In honor of Sonny Kingoff, a longtime supporter of academics and athletics at GWHS, a scholarship opportunity is
available to a graduating senior who has participated in varsity sports (including cheerleading).

 Be a graduating senior
 Have participated in any sport, including varsity cheerleading.
 Have shown high moral character, have maximized his or her ability in sports endeavors, and have
exhibited leadership

THE LEE-JACKSON EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The Lee-Jackson Foundation in coordination with the Virginia Department of Education sponsors the Lee-Jackson
Scholarship Program. The objective of the program is to acquaint young people with the historical legacy of two of
Virginia’s most outstanding military figures, General Robert E. Lee and General Thomas J. Stonewall Jackson.

 Be a high school junior or senior in the state of Virginia
 Plan to attend a four year college or university or attend a community college and transfer to a four
year college or university
 Write an essay as described in the application materials
(One) $10000, (eight) $2000, (nine) $1000 scholarships The awards are as follows:
 $2,000 for the first place essay, and $1,000 for the second place essay, submitted in each of the
state’s public high school regions.
 A bonus award of $8,000 will go to the single essay that is judged the most outstanding in the state.
The winning essay has an award total value of $10,000 and the winning essayist is designated as the
J. Clifford, Jr. Scholar.

MARY JORDAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Mary Jordan Memorial Scholarship, established in memory of Mary Wescott Jordan who died at the age of 23
following heart surgery.

file and on the GWHS website.

PAMPLIN LEADERSHIP AWARD
The Pamplin Leader Award is a one-year merit based $5,000 tuition scholarship presented annually to 40 qualified students from
among the Commonwealth of Virginia’s public high schools... The student must apply, receive acceptance, accepts the offer of
admission. Recipients of the Pamplin Leader Award must possess a balanced record of outstanding academic achievement
community service and leadership experience.

 Be a senior enrolled at a Virginia public school planning to attend Virginia Tech
 Have a 3.8 overall GPA

You must submit the application to Ms. McKinnie. The GWHS Scholarship Committee will select one
application from all applications submitted. Virginia Tech will disqualify your application if you do not follow the
application procedures.
The completed application and supporting documents are due to Ms. McKinnie in Guidance no later than
January 23, 2015.

VIRGINIA PTA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The Virginia PTA offers scholarships to graduating Virginia high school students who are planning to enter teaching
or other youth-serving professions.

 Reside in Virginia and graduate from a Virginia public high school

BETTER BUSINESS BUREAU STUDENT OF INTEGRITY SCHOLARSHIP AWARD
The Better Business Bureau Serving Western Virginia offers the annual “Student of Integrity Award” to honor seniors
in the 32 county service areas who personify high ethics as demonstrated through leadership, community service,
overall personal judgment and academic history.

ROANOKE COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS
Roanoke College offers numerous scholarship programs including the Roanoke College Scholars Program. The
Roanoke College Scholars Program has a value of $190,000 for over four years. Please check the Roanoke College
website for deadline and requirements.
JT - MINNIE MAUDE CHARITABLE TRUST SCHOLARSHIP
The trust’s primary goal is to provide higher education opportunities through financial assistance to deserving and needy
students in the Danville and surrounding area. Scholarships selection is based on academic achievement and promise, financial
need and other related selection criteria. The application period opens January 2015.

JOHN R. LILLARD VIRGINIA AIRPORT OPERATORS COUNCIL SCHOLARSHIP
The John R. Lillard Scholarship program is to assist future aviation leaders and to honor John R. Lillard, an aviation
enthusiast and humanitarian. Mr. Lillard served in leadership positions with the Capital Region Airport Commission
(which operates Richmond International Airport), Chesterfield County Airport, and Eastern Airlines.

The Virginia Aviation Business Association (VABA) Scholarship is provided for a Virginia senior in high school or college

THE GLORIA AND CARLOS R. BELL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM FOR THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
Gloria and Carlos R. Bell longtime residents of Gloucester County, Virginia created a trust fund to provide scholarship support to
forward the careers of students pursuing degrees in engineering, mathematics, physics, computer science or another related
scientific field at the University of Michigan. The scholarship is based on academic accomplishments rather than financial need.

The scholarship will provide financial support to students selected from the Commonwealth of Virginia, with a preference given
to residents of the Gloucester, Virginia area.

THE AMERICAN LEGION HIGH SCHOOL ORATORICAL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM
The purpose of the American Legion High School Oratorical Scholarship Program is to develop a deeper knowledge
and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States.

20 years of age; enrolled in high school, and domiciled in the state they enter competition.

degree. These scholarships are reserved for exceptional individuals who share Brown’s traits of excellence,
leadership, commitment to public service, and desire to make a difference.

FREE SPEECH ESSAY CONTEST (FIRE) – High school juniors and seniors for the 2014-2015 school year are eligible to
participate in FIRE’s essay contest. Students must submit an essay between 800 and 1,000 words on the provided topic. One $10,000
first prize, one $5,000 second prize, and three $1,000 runner-up prizes will be awarded for the best essays. Four $500 winners will be
chosen from the remaining entrants in a drawing. FIRE will accept essay contest entries for August 1, 2014 to January 1, 2015.

Don’t Pay for Help to Find Money for College
Commercial financial aid advice services can cost well over $1,000. You might have heard or seen these claims at seminars,
over the phone from telemarketers, or online:




"Buy now or miss this opportunity." Do not give in to pressure tactics. Remember, the “opportunity” is a chance to
pay for information you could find yourself free.
“We guarantee you’ll get aid.” A company could claim it fulfilled its promise if you were offered student loans or a
$200 scholarship. Is that worth a fee of $1,000 or more?
“I’ve got aid for you; give me your credit card or bank account number.” Never give out a credit card or bank
account number unless you know the organization you are giving it to is legitimate. You could be putting yourself at risk
of identity theft.
Don’t Pay for the FAFSA
Several Websites offer help filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for a fee. These sites are not affiliated
with or endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education. We urge you not to pay these sites for assistance.
If asked for your credit card information while filling out the FAFSA online, you are not at the official government site.

Protect Yourself from Identity Theft
How Does Identity Theft Happen?
Criminals gain access to personal data such as names, social security numbers, and bank and credit card information. Using
the stolen data, the criminal can fraudulently obtain credit cards; establish cellular phone accounts, and more.
Reduce Your Risk When Applying for Aid
 After completing the FAFSA online, exit the application and close the browser, any cookies created during your session
will be deleted automatically
 Don’t tell anyone your Federal Student Aid PIN, even if that person is helping you fill out the FAFSA
 Review your financial aid award documents and keep track of the amounts applied for and awarded
 Never give personal information over the phone or Internet unless you made the contact. If you have questions about a
solicitation or about your student loan account, call 1-800-4-FED-AID.
 Federal Student Aid securely stores your information on the National Student Loan Data System. However, if you
complete or even request a student loan application from a lender, you may be granting the lender permission to
access your file. Before providing personal information to an organization, review its privacy policy.
 Shred receipts and documents with personal information that are no longer useful.
 Immediately report all lost or stolen identification to the issuer and to the police, if appropriate. (U.S. Department of
