Allow an hour. Admission £3.00, 18u free Thursday 4th April 2013. CZIFFRA TRIO (Sophie Dolman, piano, Elizabeth Stahlmann, violin, Herrick Hayes, cello). A much anticipated appearance by locally-based professionally trained musicians in an ambitious programme dominated by Schubert’s E flat Piano Trio, with its particularly beautiful slow movement. Also included are the E minor Trio of Haydn, and – on a lighter note – an excerpt from American Paul Schoenfield’s Café Music. About 65’. Thursday 11th April 2013. VATCHE JAMBAZIAN, piano. This prize-winning Australian pianist gives every indication of being rather special. Haydn’s intense B minor Sonata (no 32), Schumann’s Kinderszenen, two Schubert Impromptus and Chopin’s B flat minor Scherzo: what could be a more self-recommending programme? Thursday 18th April 2013. ALETHEIA DUO (Paolo Delucchi, violin, Albert Lau, piano). The first of three concerts featuring Italian violinist Paola Delucchi as a chamber musician (see also 9th May, 6th June). Here she is playing with the Hong Kong-born pianist Albert Lau in two popular French sonatas – Franck and Ravel – and Brahms’ exhilarating ‘FAE’ Scherzo. Thursday 25th April 2013. BEDRISKA TRIO (Panaretos Kryriatzidis, piano, Manuel Arellano Bover, violin, Miriam Wakeling, cello). A warm welcome to this prize-winning ensemble, formed in 2011 by postgraduates at Trinity Laban, serving the rich fare of two major works: Beethoven’s early but hugely ambitious E flat Trio op 1/1 and Brahms’ C major Trio op 87. Thursday 2nd May 2013. SARAH OLIVER, cello, SALLY HALSEY, piano. Two new guests: Sarah is currently a postgraduate student at Trinity Laban under Natalie Clein. Bruch’s beautiful Kol Nidrei is framed by two of the major sonatas in the repertoire, Beethoven’s C major op 102/1 and the Shostakovich. Thursday 9th May 2013. ARCHE TRIO (Albert Lau, piano, Paola Delucchi, violin, Sacha McCalloch, cello). The programme includes two great St Mary’s favourites, the beautiful Dumky Trio of Dvořák and the powerful Shostakovich E minor Trio – one of the last century’s greatest chamber works (another performance of this on 11th July), along with a tango by Piazzolla. Allow 75 mins. Thursday 16th May 2013. MARIA CANYIGUERAL, piano. A fine Catalan pianist with an enterprising programme of late Beethoven (op 126 Bagatelles) and Brahms (op 119 Pieces), and Spanish contributions by Xavier Montsalvatge and Benet Casablancas. Thursday 23rd May 2013. GAGLIANO ENSEMBLE (Petr Limonov, piano, Galya Bisengalieva, violin, Robert Ames, viola, Magda Pietraszweska, cello). As we have supported ‘the Gaglianos’ from their early days, regulars will know that this is now one of the most exciting younger chamber ensembles around. Bach’s C minor Sonata for Violin and Piano, Beethoven’s C minor String Trio and the short Piano Quartet arranged from Mahler by Alfred Schnittke. Thursday 30th May 2013. ADRIAN POON, clarinet, EMAS AU, piano). We are delighted to welcome back this exceptional clarinettist. A richly mixed programme of delights: Sonatas by Poulenc and Bernstein, also Schumann, Chopin and Finzi. Emas, like Adrian from Hong Kong, is making her first St Mary’s appearance: a musician of exciting versatility, extending her activities to jazz and pop. Thursday 6th June 2013. APEIRON STRING QUARTET (Paola Delucchi, Tabea Sitte, violins, Carl Austin, viola, Noelle Casella, cello). Italy, Germany, UK, US – an international line-up for this year-old ensemble. It is particularly pleasing to have on the programme Schubert’s wonderful D minor Death and the Maiden Quartet, along with Webern’s early (1905) passionate love-quartet, unimaginatively called Langsamer Satz/Slow Movement and not published in his lifetime. Thursday 13th June 2013. EDWARD McCULLAGH, violin, CHAD VINDIN, piano. Edward is a fine soloist and chamber musician, known to us as a member of the Wolfe String Trio. Chad is a new guest. Their recital will include a baroque sonata by Geminiani and Stravinsky’s entertaining Suite italienne, drawn from his ballet Pulcinella. Thursday 20th June 2013. ALISON ROSE, soprano, PHILIP SMITH, baritone, JAMES CHEUNG, piano. Highly regarded accompanist James, like so many musicians, loves our venue, and, after the triumph of Manuela Leonhartsberger, has brought two more remarkable talents to St Mary’s. Details of the programme are not yet available. Texts/translations will be supplied where possible. Thursday 27th June 2013. MARTIN SMITH, euphonium, ANNE LE HAIR, piano. St Mary’s relishes the unusual, and a euphonium/piano duo is just that. After early enthusiasm, Martin returned to the euphonium in his thirties, took the exams with distinction, and is now a determined ambassador for the instrument. He is playing with a busy Hertfordshire-based pianist and teacher. They will be featuring a diverse selection of arrangements. Thursday 4th July 2013. LUCA LUCIANO, clarinet, PAOLO LOSI, piano. A huge privilege to have a return visit by this audacious and entertaining virtuoso with his extended clarinet! – not forgetting his brilliant (usually jazz) pianist. Luca will play some of his arrangements and own compositions included on a new CD, which will be on sale. Nobody with an interest in the clarinet should miss this. Thursday 11th July 2013. DOPPLER PIANO TRIO (Jenna Sung, piano, Merel Vercammen, violin, William Harvey, cello). This is a trio going onwards and upwards very rapidly, less than a year old but with a debut at the Wigmore Hall already scheduled. Come and hear two huge masterpieces, Brahms’ B major Trio op 8, and Shostakovich’s wartime Trio in E minor op 67. Allow 65 mins. Thursday 18th July 2013. TAKE2 (Andrea Pfenniger, soprano, Adrian Boorman, countertenor, with Jonathan French, piano). MR HANDEL’S HEROES AND HEROINES. An exciting pairing of soprano and countertenor voices, this experienced duo present a varied and entertaining hour of opera and oratorio scenes, painting vivid pictures of the besotted lovers, battle-scarred heroes and feisty heroines. There will be a free all-colour programme. Thursday 25th July 2013. SALLY QUANTRILL, flute, LYDIA BOSWORTH, piano. Great summer favourites at St Mary’s; they just love coming. As always, they will bring a most delightful recital, ranging from the baroque (Handel), the classic French flute repertoire (Gaubert) to the approachable modern (Arnold Cooke). EVENING CONCERTS All start at 7.30. Admission £10.00, £8.50 Friends of St Mary’s, 18u free, includes wine/juice/nibbles and programme. No ticketing, doors open 7.00 Saturday 27th April 2013. MARSYAS TRIO (Fei Ren, piano, Helen Vidovich, flute, Valerie Welbanks, cello). This groundbreaking and awardwinning trio will just have returned from a tour of China: it will certainly have been successful, for this group attract nothing but high praise. Their varied programme for our evening has something for everyone: Haydn, Piazzolla, Martinů, Couperin, Messiaen and – as a finale – George Crumb’s hypnotically beautiful Vox Balaenae / Voice of the Whales, directed to be played by masked players in a wash of blue light. Sponsored by the Friends of St Mary’s. Wednesday 5th June 2013. KRISTIINA ROKASHEVICH (aka ROKAŠEVITŠ), piano. A last-minute substitute lunchtime booking, Kristiina’s exciting playing made a tremendous impression, and we had no hesitation in offering her this evening concert. She is playing a beautifully constructed and thoroughly enjoyable programme: Bach, Beethoven, Franck, Liszt and Debussy, and two short Preludes by her fellow-Estonian Eduard Tubin. (NB ‘Rokaševitš on the internet, but mostly in Estonian.) Sponsored by the Friends of St Mary’s. Saturday 13th July 2013. JULIA WEATHERLEY, KARA FLORISH, sopranos, PANARETOS KYRIATZIDIS, piano. Our sell-out Serenades, Songs and Supper was such a success, this is a kind of encore – but without the supper. The irrepressible performers are now putting together a programme of stories told through song and opera which they call ONCE UPON A T IME. Nobody who loves the human voice should miss this first-class entertainment! Sponsored by the Friends of St Mary’s. We must thank the Rector and his staff at St Mary’s, especially Karen Baker. Without such cheerful support, tolerance and patience these concerts would not happen. We are also indebted to the Friends of St Mary’s for generously sponsoring our Sunday and evening concerts.
