Mary SAGER. Mary Ann Sarah Margaret (Sarah) DUMOND was born about 1 May 1817, in Welland
or York, Ontario, died 3 Jun 1893, in Horning's Mills, Dufferin, Ontario, buried in Shelburne, Dufferin,
Ontario.
BIOGRAPHY: Thomas Pearson HODGSON was born about April 9, 1817 in Great Salkeld,
Cumberland Shire, England, son of John Hodgson and Mary Hodgson (note both had the same last
name, and were first cousins), and was named after his great uncle, Thomas Pearson, brother of his
grandmother, Ann Pearson. Probably hearing stories of the great American wilderness from his brother,
Charles (who had already settled in Canada), at the age of 22, on May 24, 1839 he landed in Ontario,
Canada. ...Within about one year he settled in Markham, York County, and married there on March 9,
1841 to Mary Ann Sarah Margaret (known as Sarah, Sarah Ann, Sarah Margaret) DUMOND. ...In 1843
the family moved to Pickering, Ontario County where they lived until 1860. They moved north to
Osprey Township, Gray County (which later became Melancthon Township, Dufferin County), for afew
years, and then in 1861/1864 up until about 1872 lived in Alliston, Tecumseth Township, Simcoe
County, Ontario. They lived out their remaining years in Melancthon Township (Dufferin County),
butwere buried in Alliston. They were members of the Methodist Church.

Stamford Township, now in that part of Welland County. Lundy's Lane was the site of 1812 battle
fought between Americans and British (with Canadian) forces on 25 July 1814. Lundy's Lane is now
part of the city of Niagara Falls. Stamford Township is adjacent (just to the south) to Niagara Township,

QUESTIONABLE LINK: Sarah Margaret Dumond is tentatively placed as the daughter of Cornelius
Dumond because of numerous circumstantial associations (deeds, etc.). Mary Dumond Morrow
suggests that shecould be the niece of Cornelius Dumond.

STORY-FATHER: Tradition of HODGSON family concerning old grandpa DUMOND (father of Mary
Ann Sarah Margaret DUMOND HODGSON); Mary Ann's parents migrated up from Pennsylvania with
the thousands that left the United States after the War of 1812; They settled in the Niagara District; She
grew up in the Niagara District, and married there in 1841; Old Grandpa DUMMOND lived to be 110,
and at the age of 105 walked from Lundy's Lane to Pickering (about 50 miles).
STORY-FATHER: Mary HODGSON; as relayed to MRS. May MORROW (my correspondence 1996);
Grandpa DUMOND died while visiting relatives in Pickering and supposedly taken home for burial.

T.P.HODGSON, age 76years, 1 month and 2 days; Deceased was well known and highly respected,
having resided at Horning's Mills for a long time; The funeral took place at Shelburne cemetery last
Sunday <4 Jun> morning.
DEATH-STORY: Family tradition says she had quite a lingering illness. Some sources have said she
had dropsy (excess water excretion).

1877>: Dec 18, 1945 Dear Niece, Just received your newsy letter yesterday, and as I was just going to
send you a card for XMAS, will write you now. Was awful sorry to hear of Annie Woods death. Of
coarse, after Dora was up there last year and she was so sick I really expected of her death before. She
was a hard worker. She should have left the ranch after Dave, her husband, died. Clark sent us all a
letter. It was sent to Dora Grace and me. We was glad to hear from him and I am glad the war is over.
It always made me shudder when I heard of the boys losing their lives. Well, you want to know when we
came to Lopez Island. We left Iowa about the first of March 1877. There was quite a lot of us came all
at once. Uncle William Humphrey and aunt Annie came out to Lopez about a year before the rest of us
came out. They told us what a fine church there was out there and all the government land that was
available. All you had to do was fix a homestead rite on itfor 160 acres, and one could catch all the fish

you wanted out of the salt water and shoot a deer for your meat. So we started from Estherville, Iowa.
We was about 40 miles from the railroad station, so two of our neighbors loaded up their farm wagons
with out trunks, clothing and bedding, and we had a largelunch trunks with enough of things to eat till
we got to San Francisco. We drove all that day and got into Windom, a town in Dacota. Then we took
the Emigrant train. We had a cook stove on the train and we cook our coffee and whatever things we
had to cook. Then we had our own blankets and at night we made our own beds down in the seats we set
in the daytime. The train did not go very fats them days. Sometimes when the train was going up hill,
some of the men would get out and run along side the train while they were going up grade. After
several days we arrived in San Francisco. On theway out to San Francisco there was nothing much to
see except Indians and once in awhile a small town of white people. Omaha and Salt Lake was the two
largest towns then. Them days the only railroad to the west coast was the Union Pacific, and that was
only to San Francisco. After we got there we had to wait 3 days for a boat to Puget Sound. Then when
we got to Frisco, we found out, out boat was the old side wheeler boat with a beam engine, the same as
they have on the ferry in Frisco Bay. After about 5 days we arrived at Victoria, and it happened to be
Sunday so we stayed there all day Sunday, and Monday we came over to Port Townsend. There we met
Uncle William Humphrey with a two masted schooner. We moved aboard the schooner that afternoon
and stayed on the schooner that night. The next morning we started to sail to Lopez Island. It was a fine
morning. We sailed all day and got in to Lopez about 6 PM. We all stayed there at Uncle William
Humphreys for about 2 months. You see, there was quite a lot of us. There was about 11 of us: Grandpa
Graham and grandma (Thomas Graham and wife Janny) Tommy Graham Johny Graham Martin Philips
and wife Ellie (mothers sister) William Graham and wife Mary Norman Hodgson and brother Pearson
(me)<author of this letter> The only road there was on the way through the center of the Island, around
Fisherman Bay and up past John Bartletts place, then down to Charley Anderson. I was about 12 years
old then. We had a Fourth of July celebration at Lopez. There used to be a nice Maple grove where Dr
Muscot used to live, and there was a large crowd there that day--but as near as I can figure out, I am
about the only one alive now. I was 80 my last birthday, the 26 of November. Well I think that is about
all of the history I can give you now. If there is anything elseyou want to know I will gladly give it. I
am getting ready to take a trip with Frank and Perl to go hunting down to Mexico. There is lots of
Geese and ducks down there. We go by auto down there. They have a camp there and a speed boat.It is
driven by an airplane engine with the propeller in the air instead of the water. She makes about 20 miles
an hour. When I get back I will let you know how I enjoyed the trip. I have been sticking pretty close to
the ranch since I came out here with Dora. Dora's sister Jenny & her daughter was down here from
Alaska for about 10 days. they went back to Wyreka to stay. He is going to workin the Logging camp

P.S. I forgot to tell you the Northern Pacific Railroad did not get in to Seattle for about 2 years after we
got there. Everything came to Seattle by boat or Prairie Schooner. The only boat we had carrying mail
and passenger was the --- Enterprise. Just a little steamer with no sleeping accommodations. Just a
small cabin and one stove on Lopez and we had a canoe that we used to go to Friday Harbor in. If there

family history of the Graham, Cousins, and Hodgson family of Ireland, Ontario, and many later to Lopez
Island, Washington. Contains very valuable family information.>: Lopez, Wash Aug 16, 1947 Dear
friend Pearson We received your letter several days ago. We were glad to hear from you. We are both
well and hope you are the same. We had a good time at the Old Timers pioneer picnic at Cornwall Park.
I was at it in 1945. We were both at it in 1946. Saw people I hadn't seen for years. Ate some fine
picnic dinners there. I think we can answer some of the questions anyway. We will try and give you all
the information we can. Father <James Cousins> was born May 12, 1834 in Kilmore, County Armaugh,
Ireland. Robert Cousins was born at Kilmore March 31, 1818. William was born at Kilmore in 1824.
John was born in 1832. Jane was born June 15, 1821. Ellen was born, I think, about 1814. Mary was
born, I think, about 1816. Betty about 1829 or 1830, I think. That was the names of fathers brothers and
sisters. Robert Cousins died Nov 5, 1888. Jane died June 5, 1904. John died the spring of 1905.
Father died May 8, 1921. I don't know when the others died. William never left Ireland. He was living
yet about 1901 or 1902. Mary married a man named Henry Haddock. They were living in Ontario,
Canada the last I heard of them. Ellen married a man named John Bunton. They never left Ireland.
Betty married a man named John Withers. They never left Ireland. That I know. They all moved to
Dollingston, County Down, when father was a small boy, maybe three years old. Thomas Graham and
Jane Cousins were married in 1838. Robert Cousins and Ellen Graham were married shortly before they
left Ireland, I think. I don't know her age. She was Thomas Graham's youngest sister. I think she might
have been born about 1822 or 1823, I am not sure. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Graham and William Graham,
his father, and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Cousins, and William Graham, Thomas Graham's 15 month old son
(your step father), and Mr and Mrs John Wilson left Ireland together in May 1841 for Canada. Your
mother was born, so I heard them say, Aug 22, 1841. Thomas had two other sisters. One named Sally.
She married a man in Canada named Long. The other sister I don't know her name or anything about
her. I forgot what year Betty Wilson died. I heard them say she was 92 when she died. I never heard of
Thomas Graham or his wife ever living in Belfast. Dollingstown was about 17 miles from Belfast. It
was about a mile from Lurgen, largest inland city in Ireland. Father and mother were married Feb 30,
1860. They were both Linen weavers. My mothers folks were all weavers. Father left Ireland June 29,
1863--he was 29 then. He came over to New York on a Sailing vessel the Universe, an old East India
----. He landed in New York without any money. He got his pocket picked aboard the Ship. That was
the time Lincoln had the draft. A man met and told hima friend of his had just drafted and his friend
would give $1500 to pay one that would go in his place. So father went and got examined by the doctor.
He stood medical examination all right, the doctor passed him. But as he was going out, the doctor took
notice of his hand. He had got shot through hand in 1854 in a riot in Lurgan. He was not one the
rioters, but he happened to go to town that day. The doctor looked at his hand. He asked him if he ever
had any military training. He told he had not. If he had military training they would have taken him.
He got a job from a business man in New York City named Miller. He lived in New Jersey. He had a
small farm. He worked for Miller for 11 months then went to Canada. I think he went to Canada about
June 1864. He was there to the middle of April 1865. He was a weaver in Canada. The Grahams,
Robert Cousins and family, and himself went April 1865 to Ohio. Theylived there two years. Father
worked in Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and Pennsylvania. They all went to Iowa about 1867 to Iowa Falls.
My grandfather, fathers father, was John Cousins. He died of a stroke paralysis at the age of 63 in 1854.
His mother died in 1857. When the Grahams, Cousins, and Wilsons came to Canada in 1841 they

landed at Singhamton, Gray county, Ontario. Robert Cousins and his wife Ellen were the only Cousins
that came then. John Cousins came to America in 1861, I think. He lived at Singhamton. His wife
name was Hester Green. They had a large family. He died at Singhamton from a horse kick early in
1905. William Cousins had a large family. He was married at 18. He never left Ireland. My mothers
maiden name was Margeret Heron. She was born near Dollingstown, County Down, Ireland Sept 9,
1835. She lived in Ireland till July 11, 1871, when her and my oldest brother John and sister, Ella,left
ireland for Iowa. John was born Aug 6, 1861. Ella was born Aug 5, 1863. John was drowned Sept 1,
1872. Ella died June 6, 1943. Mother died March 31, 1891 of pneumonia at age of 55 years andnearly
seven months. Ellen Graham was born about 1843, I think. She married George Kennaird about the
summer of 1865, I think, in Ohio. They had five sons. George. Joe. Tommy. Jimmy, and Johnney. Joe
died of typhoid fever in Tacoma in 1882, I think. George died years ago, I forget, but think he has been
dead at least forty years. Jimmy died in February 1933 of diabetes. I don't know anything about John.
George Kennard lived in Iowa when he was first married. He came to Tacoma the summer of 1878. He
lived in Tacoma for a number of years. Jimmy was born there in October 1884. He went back to Iowa
again and lived there a number of years before he died. After Jane Cousins married Alf Nicolson, they
moved to Alabama. I guess they had a large family. Willie Nicholson was the<ir> oldest boy, Ithink.
John Nicholson. Joe West. Robert Burt, and a man named William Gray came out with John Cousins
when he came back from Iowa in 1902. They got back about March 10th. John Nicholson worked
forTom Upston and Jim Davis that summer 1902. He fell overboard off the Steamer Garland on the
night of Dec 24, 1902 while coming from Bellingham to Lopez between Doe Bay and Olga, Orcas
Island. His body was never found. He was drunk at the time he fell overboard. He was the only
Nicholson I ever knew. He was the only one of the family that ever was on Lopez. The old folks are
both dead now. Idon't know how many of the family is alive now or where they are, where they all in
Alabama, or other states. I think we have all the questions you asked answered. We will be glad to
answer if possibly can any questions you ask us. Write any time we will be glad to answer any

BIOGRAPHY: Norman Peter HODGSON was born September 28, 1867 in Shelburne, Dufferin
County, Ontario, son of Charles HODGSON and Mary WILSON. His father died when he was one
years old, and at the age of 2 he moved with his mother to Estherville, Emmett County, Iowa. There, in
1872 his mother married William GRAHAM. At the age of 10 years, in March 1877 his family left
Iowa, and moved to Lopez Island, San Juan County, Washington, arriving there about June 10, 1877.
(According to Clark Lovejoy) Norman headed for San Fransisco and shipped aboard a sailing schooner
bound for Japan and China. Many trans Pacific crossings later he married the ship owner's daughter,
Charlotte "Lottie" Schmaling. (As found in paper by Holly Lovejoy, wife of Steve). In one episode he
was captain of the Wester Star, one of the Moran's fleet of twelve stern wheelers. These boats were built
for the Yukon River Gold Rush. In June of 1898, all twelve of the stern wheelers were waiting out a
storm in Shelikoff Strait (Alaska). The gusts were strong in Katmai Bay and several of the stern
wheelers were in trouble. Norman P. was busy saving all the others when his own Western Star began
dragging anchor. The Western Star wrecked on the beach up in Katmai Bay. All its lumber was
slavaged and a church was built. The remaining eleven stern wheelers made itthrough Unimak Pass,
across Bristol Bay, and up the Yukon River to Dawson City. Norman was Master of the schooner,
Azalia, and sailed her to Zacher Bay, Kodiak Island, Alaska in 1925, 1926, and 1927. It was a three
masted bald headed schooner, 156 feet long, and upon arriving there, the sails were taken down and
stored, and it became a cannery, canning 1# tall cans of salmon. At the end of the fishing season he
sailed her back to Seattle. The Azalea was a sister ship to the Wawona which still bloats in Seattle's
Lake Union. Built in Eureka, California in 1890, the Azalea was a three masted bald headed schooner,
156 feet long, 344 tons, masts 105 feet overall, anddecks 80 feet to crosstree. The Azalea hauled men
and supplies to Zacher Bay, (an arm of Uyak Bay) on Kodiak Island, AK. Upon arrival, the sails were
stored and she became a floating cannery, putting up number 1 tall cans of salmon. Meanwhile, Norman
P. embarked on the 65 foot cannery tender, the Starling, and collected salmon from the nearby Kodiak
traps. At the end of the season, he'd bend on the sails to the Azalea and sail her home with tons fo
canned slamon and tired cannery workers on board. The Azalea came to an end in Sausalito in 1946.

canopy of smilax, rare ferns and orchids. .....The sister of the bride, Miss Clara Schmaling, acted as maid
of honor, while Charles Schmaling Jr. acted as best man. .....Only the family and the most intimate
friends of the contracting parties were present. .....The rooms were beautifully and tastefully arranged,
and a bountreaous repast was served. .....The presents were numerous and beautiful, many of them
coming from distant friends. .....On Tuesday the young couple departed for Monterey. On their return

Deposition of Norman Hodgson, sealer. HABITS Norman Hodgson, being duly sworn, deposes and
saith: I reside at Port Townsend, State of Washington, and am a fur-seal hunter by occupation. I have
engaged in that pursuit four seasons, in the years 1887, 1888, 1889, and 1891. I sailed in vessels
clearing from Port Townsend two seasons, and in others from Victoria, British Columbia, for two
seasons. We first fell in with fur-seals moving north early in the month of February, about 5 miles off
the coast in the region of Cape Mendocino, California. They were very scarce then, but as we traveled
up the coast we found them more numerous. Theywere most plentiful off the mouth of the Columbia
River in the early part of the month of March. The migratory movement of the fur-seal is from the
southward to the northward and westward, followingthe general trend of the coast of the mainland. The
main herd is most compactly massed between 40 and 60 miles off shore, but some of the seals scatter
and straggle over an area a long distance on each side of that. The males are generally in advance of the
females on the passage north. Females are found in the greatest numbers off Baranoff Island about the
middle of the month of May. We followed the main herd up the coast as far as the southwestern end of
Kodiak Island, where we usually left them on account of their diminished numbers. We would then go
to Sand Point, Popoff Island, aboutthe 25th of June, refit and repair the vessel and take on board fresh
supplies, and then start for Bering Sea, which we generally entered about the 10th of July. We remained
in the sea until the first part of September, when we would leave it on account of bad weather, returning
in a direct line to Puget Sound. I think the duration of the winter season has a direct bearing on the
northward migration of the fur-seal species, as I have observed that they move that way earlier after an
open winter than an unusually severe one. The first season and the last two our hunters were all white
men; but on my second cruise we carried mostly West Coast Indians from Vancouver Island as hunters.
The Indians used spears principally, while the white hunters employed breech-loading firearms (rifles
and shotguns) exclusively. Indians using spears recover more than 90 percent of all fur seals struck,
while the white hunter secures on an average about 60 or 65 percent of all fur seals shot in the season.
With whites, their greatest losses occur during the earlier part of the season. More fur-seals are lost in
proportion which are killed by means of a shotgun than with a rifle. Of the seals secured in a season
fully 70 percent are females, and of these more than 60 percent are pregnant and milking cows. The
males taken are about equally divided in numbers between yearlings and bachelors from the ages of 2 to
5 years; bulls are seldom shot. It is impossible to distinguish positively between females and males
(other than large bulls) in the water at sea, and no effort is made to do so. Full-powered bulls are readily
recognized by their great bulk and darker fur. The killing of fur-seals is therefore absolutely

indiscriminate, as the object is to secure all the skins possible, irrespective of sex, age, or condition. All
fur seals sink rapidly after being killed, and females heavy with young go down soonest; a great deal
depends on the way a seal is shot, however. If the seal be shot with the head down, as in the act of
diving, its momentum sends it under for a moment or two, when it will quickly rise to the surface and
float until the air in its body escapes,which generally occupies anywhere from five to ten minutes. A
seal shot with its head up almost always sinks instantly. Fur-seals shot when sleeping occasionally go
down at once, but the rule is for them to float for three to four minutes. They should be approached
from the leeward, and if shot in the back of the head may almost invariably be recovered. I do not
believe it possible for fur-seals to breed or copulate in the water at sea, and never saw nor heard of the
action taking place on a patch of floating kelp. I have never seen a young fur-seal pup of the same
season’s birth in the water at sea nor on a patch of floating kelp, and in fact never knew of their being
born anywhere save on a rookery. I have, however, cut open a gravid cow and taken the young one
from its mother’s womb, alive and crying. I do not believe it possible for a fur-seal pup to be
successfully raised unless born and nursed on a rookery. I have seen fur-seals resting on patches of
floating kelp at sea, but do not believe they ever haul up for breeding purposes anywhere except on
rookeries. I have never heard of, nor have I any knowledge of, any fur-seal rookeries in the North
Pacific, other than those on the seal islands of Bering Sea. While in Bering Sea we cruised around the
Pribilof Islands in all directions, often coming within view of them, but never landing or making any
attempt to do so. The proportion of females taken to males was about 70 percent, more than two-thirds
of these being nursing cows, while the remainder were two-year olds and yearlings. On first entering the
sea an occasional pregnant cow would be taken, but this was uncommon. Of the males taken in the
Bering Sea the numbers of yearlings and very young bachelors was about equal; nobulls were ever
taken. I observed that nursing cows range from 60 to 80 miles from the Pribilof Islands to fee, and were
always most numerous in a southerly and westerly direction from them. After leaving Bering Sea our
course was direct to Puget Sound, only scattering specimens of fur-seal life being observed en route;
most of these were young males. I have not personally noticed any decreasein the numbers of the
fur-seal species, but think that the constant and indiscriminate slaughter of them must tend largely to that
end. It is my belief that in order to preserve fur seal life from extermination all pelagic hunting should
be stopped and Bering Sea closed.

California, City and County of San Francisco. .....Norman Hodgson, of Port Townsend, in the State of
Washington, being duly sworn, deposes and says: .....1. I am a resident of Port Townsend, in the State of
Washington, but am now living on Powell Street, in this city, and am 24 years of age, and have been
engaged in seal-hunting for five seasons as a hunter. .....2. I was in Port Townsend on or about the 1st
day of June last, •when I was engaged by Captain' Tanner, of the Fish Commission steamer "Albatross,"
to go on board of her as hunter, to illustrate the methods of killing seals such as are practiced on the

sealing-vessels, to test the number lost by sinking, to discover the haunts of the seals in the Behring Sea,
and generally afford information to those on board the steamer. .....3. We left Port Townsend about the
1st June, and on the steamer, besides the Captain, were the following gentlemen: Professor Everman, of
Washington, and Professors Townsend and Alexander, who, Iunderstood, belonged to the steamer "
Albatross." We sailed direct for the Behring Sea, and arrived at Unalaska about the 10th June. We
remained there for about a week or ten days, when I was transferred to the "Corwin" with Professor
Townsend, whilst the other hunter who was with us, Captain Lennon by name, went with Professor
Alexander on the " Bush." The " Corwin " and " Rush " are two revenue-cutters belonging to the United
States. We then went to the islands-that is, the Pribyloff Islands. The first seals killed were about 10
miles south-west of St. George Island, on the 10th August, andI got four. They were all females in milk.
On the following day, namely, the llth, I got two seals about 100 miles west by south of St. Paul Island;
both were females, and I think both were in milk. On the 12th August I got two seals rather closer to the
island, and in about the same direction-one was a cow in milk, and the other a bull about 2 years old. On
the 13th August I got eight about 10 miles about south south-west of the north-west rookery, of which
six were cows, and about three of these cows had milk; one of the bulls was an old " wig," and the other
a 2 year-old. On the 21st August I got two, both barren cows. I used a shot-gun altogether, and killed the
seals all the way from 10 to 30 yards. Professor Townsend was not present during any of my
seal-hunting trips. I had the ordinary sealing-boat, with a boat puller and steerer. I lost one seal by
sinking during the time I was sealing-this one I shot at a long distance, from 45 to 50 yards, and it had
sunk before we could get up with the boat. Some seals I could not get to sink, although 1 tried for
several minutes to get them to do so, whilst the big bull which I killed on the 13th would have sunk very
quickly, and it had started to sink when I gaffed it. .....4. At Unalaska I was placed on board the seized
vessel " Henrietta" with Lieutenant Johnson, of the " Corwin," to proceed with her to Sitka. She had at
the time of seizure about 400 skins, and onour arrival at Sitka I was asked to inspect these to determine
the sex of the seals from which they had been taken. Captain C. IT. Hooper, of the " Corwin," asked me
to do this. I told him it was impossible to ascertain this with .any degree of accuracy, but he said to go
on anyway and do my best, and 1 did so. I gave him a statement of what I thought they were; he wished
me to swear to it, but Itold him I could not do so, but the statement I had given him was to the best of
my knowledge. After the skins are salted I consider it impossible to define the sex of the smaller skins
up to 3 years. With the old cows and old bulls, of course, an expert can tell, but I consider it quite
impossible for any one to say, after skins have been salted, that any particular skin was that of one that
hadbeen carrying young and from which the pup had been cut. .....I have hunted in the "Favourite" for
two seasons, she belonged to C. S. Spring, of Victoria; in the " Henry Denis" one season; and in the "
Sophie Sutherland" in 1891. I have hunted along the coast from here to the Fribyloff' Islands. In 1891
our vessel got about 360, of which I got 68. .....I always use shot-gun and rifle, but nearly always the
shot-gun, and lose very few seals by sinking; from 5 to 10 per cent, will cover my total loss in that
respect. A large quantity of ammunition is used by hunters in practicing when on a sealing voyage, and
also in hunting for food game. We are never stinted in any way in this respect. .....In my catches along
the coast I have got about half males, and, perhaps, not quite half; most of the females would be carrying
pup. In the Behring Sea I have got more females than males, and a great many of these would be in milk.
I have got quite a number of barren cows in both places; very few old bulls are got 135 Seals travel
singly, in twos, and also in schools, and in schools are mixed as to age and sex, and are much harder to
get that way, for there is always one on the "look-out." There is no such thing as a leader to a school-it is

every one for itself. .....I notice just as many seals as when I first hunted, but they are much wilder,
because so much more hunted. .....I think the seals should be protected, and killing stopped at the
rookeries. .....I have not been paid anything, nor has anything been promised me, for making the
foregoing statement, which I have read over and found correct. .....A Government Agent, who was
spoken of as J. E. Murray, and was taking evidence on the "Albatross," took my statement in connection
with sealing under oath on board that vessel in June last, and where the subjects touched on were the

HISTORY: Lemuel Adams and his family lived in Leavenworth, WA in the Cascade Mountains for one
winter while he worked as an engineer on the Great Northern Railway. Lemuel was a drinker and for
this reason Nellie took her daughter and left him. After their divorce, Lemuel Adams was shot to death
in a logging camp in the Cascades by a disgruntled logger whom he had fired for drinking. he was
