He played on Springfield’s 1958 NCAA East Coast College Division championship team and was captain of the 1960 team. Stone began coaching at Tilton-Northfield High School in New Hampshire in 1960 and moved to Mascoma Regional High School in New Hampshire before coming to Lowell Technological Institute in 1965. At UMass Lowell, Stone compiled an 801-393-7 record in 37 seasons. He was inducted into the UMass Lowell Athletic Hall of Fame in November 2003 after his final season with the River Hawks. Over his last 22 seasons, the River Hawks won at least 20 of the 30 games they played seven times. Stone led Umass-Lowell to the Northeast Regional Championship and Division II World Series in 2001 and 2002. In 2001, the team fell to St. Mary’s (2-1) and Delta State (6-2). In 2002, the River Hawks reached the semifinal round before falling to Cal State-Chico, 8-4. He was honored numerous times throughout his career at UMass Lowell. He was named the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Division II Coach of the Year nine times and the ABCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year five times. He was also named New England Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year six times and the Northeast-10 Conference Coach of the Year in 2003. In 1991, he was named the recipient of the Jack Butterfield Award by the members of NEIBA. During his career, Stone has also given back to his sport. He served as president of NEIBA, the chair of exhibitors of the ABCA Convention from 1992-2008 and spent many years as a member of the ABCA All-American Committee and the NCAA Northeast Region Advisory Committee. Stone was inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Hall of Fame in 2010. DAVID BOUTIN The uniform number 18 had not been worn since that tragic day in September of 1990, when David Boutin, a catcher for the Umass-Lowell, lost his fight with cancer. The number was not officially retired until 2008, but it was always understood through the years that it would never be worn again. Boutin, who grew up in Lowell and attended Central Catholic, played three years at Umass-Lowell (1988, 1989, and part of 1990), and Major League scouts began following him after the 1989 season. During that season, he batted .291 with 14 RBIs, 12 runs scored, and had a slugging percentage of .418. He was captain-elect for his senior season. In April of 1990, he was diagnosed with Rhabdosarcoma, a rare cancer, and died less than five months later at age 21. He left a lasting impression on his family, coaches, and teammates… When he wasn't playing ball, he was always in the Lowell community doing something to help the homeless or someone less fortunate than he was. He was a caring and giving person. He was very well liked. He would have made a great captain. David was like a son to former coach Jim Stone. When he got sick, Coach always put his best foot forward on his behalf. He tried to make the last few months of his life special. Shortly after Boutin's death, the UMass-Lowell athletic department named its annual male studentathlete of the year award in his honor. The award goes to a student-athlete who exemplifies excellence in sport, academics, service to the community, and leadership. Additionally, Boutin's mother, Fleurette, created the David J. Boutin Memorial Scholarship Fund, presented annually to a member of the baseball team who best copies the character of her son.
