Copyright © 2003, HomeOfHeroes.com, Inc ALL RIGHTS RESERVED The Place Itself By William Bill Bolt The history of the West Point Reservation began with a corrupt and then a reform government in New York, a town at the time (1693) still called New Amsterdam. The popular story often told is that one Captain John Evans, commander of HMS Richmond was to say the least, "on the take." The HMS Richmond was a cutter assigned to prevent piracy and smuggling on the Hudson River. Captain Evans was appointed to command the Richmond by the Royal Governor Fletcher. Captain Evans, as purported by most, could not spot a pirate ship with a spyglass. It appeared too, that this was exactly the way the Royal Governor wanted it. Because of the flourishing wealth of the Royal Governor, due to Captain Evans' blindness, the good captain found himself in possession of 18 miles of Hudson River waterfront that extended inward for 30 miles. His Estate consisted of some 500 square miles. Much to his dismay, Queen Anne revoked the grant made to Captain Evans in the late 17 th century. A series of land acquisitions were made from 1723 through 1839. In 1839 the land acquisitions were properly surveyed and permanent boundaries of the West Point Reservation were established. By January 30, 1941, the Reservation comprised 16,714 acres. West Point's great building period was inaugurated in 1902. This building period was conducted by the architectural firm of Cram, Goodhue and Ferguson. The North Barracks and West Wing of the Cadet gymnasium were designated by architect Paul Phillippe Cret. The Administration Building is the central motif of the West Point plan. The tower of this majestic building is 160 feet high and built of solid masonry native granite in the form of a battlemented tower. Cadets enter through a sallyport that guards the massive courtyard. The most impressive feature of the Administration Building is the Academic Board Room. It is a Gothic hall lighted in colors by stained glass windows and the great stone mantel is ornamented by statues of nine of the world's greatest warriors. The walls of the interior court of the Administration Building are decorated by coats of arms cut in stone. i As breathtakingly beautiful is the majestic mountains surrounding West Point. It is indeed a fortress built by God. West Point, the home of the United States Military Academy, is the oldest fort in the United States. Since West Point trains a cadre of officers who in turn are dedicated to training the United States Army, West Point is important to every American. THE MISSION OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY IS TO PRODUCE OFFICERS OF THE ARMY AND HAVE QUALITIES AND ATTRIBUTES ESSENTIAL TO THEIR PROGRESSIVE AND CONTINUING DEVELOPMENT THROUGHOUT THEIR CAREERS AS OFFICERS AND LEADERS. This mission is successfully accomplished through what is called a GENERAL OBJECTIVE. That objective reads: THE MISSION IS ACCOMPLISHED BY EDUCATION AND TRAINING DIRECTED TOWARD THE INCULCATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE REUISITE MORAL, MENTAL, PHYSICAL AND PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND ATTRIBUTES UPON WHICH GRADUATES MAY BUILD AS COMMISSIONED OFFICERS AND READILY ACQUIRE THE TECHNICAL AND PROFESSIONAL PROFICIENCY COMMENSURATE WITH THEIR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES. It has been said by many of those graduating from the United States Military Academy that the very physical location and topography of West Point contributes to the development of character, that the rugged granite hills of the Hudson Valley from Which West Point is hewn enter psychologically into the very soul of the cadet. The West Pointer is America's professional soldier, charged with indelibly impressing upon fellow officers and soldiers the traditions and trust of the United States Army just as they have been ingrained in the cadets' own minds at West Point. To define or even attempt to define West Point would be to defile it. Suffice it to say, each West Pointer knows that a strong structure has been built in his or her heart; he or she knows their very soul has been fortified.
